Case 580D Backhoe Brakes

Neighbor bought a 580D Loader Backhoe. Hydraulics, steering and gears are all ok, but there's absolutely NOTHING on the brakes. Easy fix or a
pain in the butt? Thanks.

They are the same "Band Actuated Disc" brakes CASE used all through the 60's on the farm tractors, except on the 580D they are applied with a slave cylinder. On the front side of the firewall are 2 Master Cyl's. Start there. Are they filled with Hy-Tran type oil as they should be? Are the slaves actuating? If those 2 areas are ok, do the brakes need adjusting? If not, then the covers will have to come off for further inspection.

John is right on the money as far as the brakes are concerned except the master cylinders are located under the dash, on top of the dash there is a removable panel to service the brake fluid level. At the age those machines are if you are concerned about a long term fix replacement of the masters and slaves is almost a certainty as there is usually pitting in the master cylinder bore which will make a rebuild impractical.

If the pedals go clear to the floor I would remove the access plate and check the fluid level, you can try filling and bleeding and with luck you may get the pedals to pump up, if the adjusting nuts are free the brakes will self adjust unless some fool has removed the adjusting mechanism. I have done many of those and there really no compromise when fixing them. The 580 K series was the first to have the cylinders in front of the firewall.

In addition to what I already posted the parts manual shows a decal that states that BRAKE FLUID should not be used in D brakes, Hytran or A Dexron type oil should be used, If brake fluid was used serious damage can be done to the rubber parts, The slave cylinder are the same part number between some models but the O ring seals must be changed depending on which model and fluid is used.
