Ignition Timing a 300RN.

I decided to static time the ignition on my 300RN yesterday. I usually do this after I bring a tractor home, but hadn't done this one yet. Looked up the particulars in my copy of the I&T shop manual and was surprised at what I found. The pointer on the flywheel has to be set 7/32" before DC. I found this to be a bit odd. Why didn't they make a mark on the flywheel for this spot? Anyway, the next thing I found was that the timing window on the bellhousing was towards the bottom. I had to lay on the floor in order to get a good sighting on the flywheel marks and the pointer. Has anyone else on this forum timed a 300RN and thought the way things were set up an oddity?

I have timed several 300/300B G148 engines in addition to my own 310rn and 311B. They all had timing marks on the flywheel as in the pic. Time to the IGN mark, that is about 4 BTDC.

Joe (Wa), If you look in the I&T repair manual for the 300-300B paragraph 82-85, it shows that the timing marks for a 300 is different than the 300B. The 300 doesn't have the IGN. stamped on the flywheel. At least my 300RN doesn't.

I have a 1956 310RN & a 1959 311B. They both have the IGN timing marks, as well as, every other 300/300B that I have timed. I have I&T C-201 service manual that includes 300/300B along with 17 other models from model C to 800B. It does in fact describe 300RN timing as you posted but I have to go with the original Case service manual and my experience. How about check your flywheel and let us know what your marks are.

The pics are from Case 300-300B service manual Rac 9-92002 dtd 6-59.

I looked the flywheel over when I set it up for statice timing the distributor. Below the DC mark there was nothing. Above the DC mark there was a line with a number ten near it. I didn't turn the flywheel much further than that. The engine starts and runs really well the way I set it. Leave it to me to have the oddball out of all the 300RNs that Case built.

I have seen timing marks (not just 300) that were lightly and unevenly stamped. I am sure you have too. The IG might look like a 10 with the N faintly stamped or missing. In any event a line just above the DC should be the 4 BTDC that is correct.
