Case 970 standard clutch allignment tool

I've had good luck with the universal auto type clutch aliment tools on car trucks and tractors. They cost around $10-15 or you might be able to rent one form some place like O'Reilly's

Tighten the bolts on the pressure plate just tight enough so you can stick the handle of a breaker bar in place of the shaft and move the clutch plate. Line the outside of the clutch disk centered in the outside of the pressure plate, or center the hub in the center. You will be 5 times closer to center than any tool will get you. When centered tighten the bolts.

What I've done when I don't have an alignment tool is leave the bolts in the pressure plate so the clutch disk is loose behind it. Then as I slide the transmission towards the engine I reach in through the access port to get to the grease zerk for the throw out bearing and line the splines up between the disk and the input shaft. After I've bolted the bell housing to the engine I reach through the same opening and remove the pressure plate bolts one at a time as I rotate the engine around.

NO I am talking about the universal clutch alignment tool. It is a metal rod with screw on ends to fit different pilot bearings and a cone shaped part that fits into the clutch disk. I've had the one I have for well over 30 years and it has lined up car truck and tractor clutches many, many times
