Case David Brown 1690 - the good and the bad?

I'd like to hear of anybody's experience with the Case DB 1690 tractor. I've had a smaller 3-cyl David Brown which has given exemplary service for the past 35 years but from what I've read here and elsewhere some of these newer, larger models had mixed reviews.

Is there anything that a guy should watch out for? The tractor I'm looking at has a little under 5000 hrs.
 
Jim I very seldom steer people away from Case products, but this will be an exception. I have only serviced two 1690's. I thought they were hard starting, gutless water
and oil leaking tractors. I will leave it at that. 990's, 995's and 1210's are great units, just don't know why the 1690's are the way they are. Thats my 2 cents, Rod.
 
Had a 1490 and a 1690 side by side pulling balers. 1490 out did the 1690. No problems with 1490 but the 1690 would seem to break down with a lot of little problems. The trans being the worst along with the pto breaking. Lot of electrical gremlins too.
 
We had a case 1490 i wish we still had it. It was the best tractor we ever owned. The clutch was the weakest link in the tractor tho
 
There were 2 of them sold new in this farming community and both were nothing but trouble for the owners. Possibly the worst tractor Case ever sold. Don
 
Un fortunately we sold a good number of 1690s They haunted us for years. Some caught fire and burned, some had tranny problems, and all of them leaked antifreeze between the heads. You best bet is to walk away. The 1690s were the black duck in the flock.

2090 is a good tractor. It is a depowered 2290 with no turbo. 504 engine, could be a 12 speed power shift, or a straight clutch 8 speed. Closed center hydraulics. Nice cab with heat and air. 110 HP. Not quite as handy as the 970/1070. They are 35 years old so I am sure there some out there that are worn out.
