Case toolkit

Hi All -

I picked up some neat Case stuff at a local sale lately. A longtime
well-known indie mechanic who?d been in business forever recently
sold out.

I was wondering about this Case diesel toolkit that he bought from
the local dealership years ago. Adirondack said it was required for
dealers to have them - but was it because of lessons learned with
problems of the 500? Or just to service the 700-800-900s, due to
sales volume etc?

Were there other required toolkits too? Or was this more of an
exceptional item?

I also got a super cool 1921 advertising booklet. It is almost 50
pages long and covers the crossmotors and plows and how they
were made, etc.

I thought it was interesting - on the listing on the back of the book -
where it makes the big distinction between JI Case plows and the
Grand Detour plows. I wonder why Case didn?t absorb the GD
plows immediately after purchasing the company.

Thanks for any info,

Howard,

In 1953 Case issued a policy that all dealers were to have a diesel repair area that was clean and well lit in order to service the new diesel engines in the 500 and the upcoming 400. Up to this time Case had many part time and small time dealers who did not do their own mechanic work. These dealers could be hardware stores, general stores, gas stations, farmers, etc. I believe this was a tool for Case to weed out some of their lackluster dealers and, at the same time, provide a more professional service experience for their customers. Your toolkit was part of the diesel engine servicing tools that went hand in hand with this new policy.

As far as plows are concerned, The JI Case Plow Company had the right to use the Case name on their plows and tillage equipment. So, the JI Case Threshing Machine Company had to continue to use the Grand Detour name until the JI Case TM Co. bought all the naming rights back from Massey Harris. Don

The "500" introduction was the first mass produced diesel from the Case Company, this was a big change in engines, and they wanted to have the training and tools in hands of dealers that would be selling them. The "500" was one of the finest diesel engines of its time. They use too advertise you could "balance" on edge a Buffalo Nickel on the fender as the engine was running, to show how balanced the engine was. My Dad and I did this on a old "500" we had, and its fact.

I do feel there were other special tools before this kit for other tractors. And it was a ongoing program to this day.

I also agree with Don Rudolph

Howard,

I have one of those kits ,has some of the same tools and some different.

I think this one came through Mack trucks as the fellow I got it from worked

for mack dealer back when Mack used linova injection.

Thanks for all the great info, Fellows! Very interesting!

I've got a couple of non-running 500s I'll have to try these out on!

Thanks,
Howard
