Question for the Battery Experts

I have an 830CK diesel that uses 2, 6V batteries. Batteries are in good shape and the posts are clean as a whistle. After being
stored all winter, there is heavy corrosion at one side of the battery tray and also in the slide rail. So corroded, the battery
tray would not even slide out. What's up, why the corrosion? I have used a hose on the side of the batteries and in the tray to
wash off the dust but I wouldn't think that would have an affect.

Thanks in advance for your response.

if you didnt get the acid neutralized with baking soda and washed off good and clean it will keep on corroding. things like that i remove the parts , clean them good prime and paint them. if you dont want to paint them spray the metal down with fluid film. including the posts.

Can't explain the corrosion, but 2-6v batteries is a poor set up that everyone got away from. 2-12V batteries hooked in parallel is a much better arrangement & will spin the engine faster. 2 group 30's will fit nicely in your battery box.

I usually see that when batteries have been overfilled. The bottom of the little tube extending from the battery top is the max water level when the battery is fully charged. Often people will fill the battery to that level or above when they have a dead battery, discover that adding water does not add charge, then charge it and it overflows. If that overflow is not neutralized with baking soda or some other alkaline substance it will cause corrosion to any metal it contacts even if it has been rinsed off. It will cause corrosion to your skin also. I keep a bug sprayer at work filled with water/baking soda solution, at home I just use a 99-cent house plant spray bottle. Rinse with clear water afterward, baking soda can corrode metal also. It just dries out skin though, nothing a little hand lotion won't cure.
