I need help ID'ing a case 188 gas engine. It is suppose to be a '74. It's in a dozer now, but I don't know what it was in originally.

I need to get bearings, rings & gaskets, so that I can rebuild it.

The tag on the side of the engine say's #2127720

Thanks, Pat

I am trying to figure out what engine was in my neighbors 450 dozer. It was suppose to be a 188 gas, and my neighbor had a replacement 188 gas installed into it. But it turned out to be bad engine, so I am trying to rebuild it for him. All the journals are toast, and it never knocked. I don't see how. Looks like it was run without oil, but it was not.

Anyways, the old engine checks the pistons to be 3.782 (I have to go check the bores at his place yet) The replacement engine, which was bought as a 188 gas, checks the bore to be 3.965.

A .188 is suppose to be a bore of 3.812, which his old engine is .030 under bore for a 188.

A 201 is suppose to be a bore of 3.937, which his replacement engine is .030 over bore for a 201. (could been bored at one time) The tag on the side of the block reads 2127720 Which I do not know what it means.

How can I find out what these engines are. I want to use the crank out of the old engine in the replacement engine, but I need to find out if they are the same crankshafts.

I can use any help at all.

Thanks, Pat

looks like the 188 engine oil filter stands up and on the 201 it
lays down. Think they used the same head on both engines.
The number on the tag could be the serial number and that
won?t tell you the model. Is there another number above that
one on your tag? Could you post some pictures of the
engines? For the crank check the casting numbers on both.
That?s about all I can offer as I haven?t had a lot of experience
with these engines. Hope this helps.

Here is some pictures of both engines. The yellow one is the engine that came with the dozer The orange one is the replacement one he had put in.

The yellow one, the pistons check out to be 3.782.
It has the oil filter coming out of the front of the block. It also has a oil fill tube, on the opposite side then the fuel pump, distributor & oil filter.

The orange one, the cylinders check out to be 3.965
It has the oil filter coming out of the side of the block, going up at a angle. It also does not have a oil fill tube, it's in the valve cover.

The ID tag on the side of the orange one, has the serial # stamped on (2127720), it has nothing in the area for the model number. It must have been inked stamped on, and is now gone.

Thanks, Pat

Can't anyone clue me in as to what these engines are, so that I can get the right parts for the orange one. It was suppose to be a 188, but I don't think it is.
