New Case VAC

So I just picked up a Case VAC, I have a service manual ordered, but in the meantime I'm wondering if you all could help me out. Not sure of the year yet but it does not have an eagle hitch or 3 point, so not sure what year that makes it? (I haven't looked for a serial num yet, where might that be?) Anyway I'm wondering what type and where to add rear end fluid? Second question is regarding hydraulics, it has a belly mower and wont lower, the cylinder is free, I can make it drop by unhooking the hose at the cylinder. I see two rectangle head bolts at the rear of the pump, (which is mounted with the gear drive on the right side of the tractor) I took them off, I see a spring in one (the bottom one) and no spring in the other (top)? I assume there is a valve in there that is sticking or something? Am I on the right track by cleaning out these two ports or is there somewhere else I should be looking? thanks

Serial number is on a plate on the "dash board" above the steering column. The 1950 models came with the eagle hitch, I know cause that is what mine is. Cannot help with the high pressure pump issues. gobble

Lack of 3 point does not say what year it maybe. I have 4 VAC tractors 2 are 1946 and did not have a 2 point but one of those 2 had what I would call an up side down 3 point since it lifted by way of the center link. The 2 1949 VAC I have, have Stockton 3 points on them.

As for your lift problem if you have the belt pulley type of hyds sounds like the valve is not working as it should so you may need to paly with-it a bit to get it working right. Have one of those units sitting right here in my office

do you have an extension spring attached to your lift you on the LH side of the torque tube to the underside of the LH platform? that is to help the cylinder retract. you should have enough mass in the deck to allow it to go down.

There is no spring but when I disconnect the hose going into the cylinder fluid comes out and the mower goes down and the hydraulic plunger extends, so I think the deck is heavy enough. I think there is something going on in the valve assembly on the pump.

Thank you I will look at that link. My serial number on my tractor is missing.. Is there any numbers on the block or rear end that may help in any year identification? Thanks again

Look at both those links. There might be a clue as to what you need to do or if an operating part is missing.

Engine s/n will be stamped into the engine block above the starter. Earlier VA were usually stamped horizon just under the head gasket at the rear of the block. Later tractors were stamped vertical on a flat just above the starter.

This pic is engine s/n in chronological order. Won't give the exact year built, just ballpark. Read the last para. Engine may have also been changed out.

For some reference A-4700001 engine s/n started sometime in 1949. Your tractor is probably older than that. Post the s/n, maybe someone has similar with tractor s/n and can give you a ballpark year.
