541L general outer drive axle seal replacement

Does anybody know if you can take the axle housing off without removing the axle to replace the seal.
Or do you have to take the gear off and remove it all together.
Rigged up a housing puller, but?
 
If you are just replacing the axle seal, there is no reason to pull the whole axle housing. Just drill a small hole in the seal, thread a screw into hole and hook a pry bar on the screw to pull the seal out.

I'd use an emoticon. But there isn't one for the shock and elation.
I just figured that was a washer to protect the seal.
I guess the parts book I bought for it should have smacked me upside the head. Thank you kindly.
For future reference, you wouldn't know if you can pull that axle housing off without removing the whole axle assembly do you.
You don't have to answer, but seeing as how the seal has red paint, I'm guessing the bearing and seal both have never been replaced. Thus I bought an outer bearing and race just in case.
I bought a shop manual and a parts manual for this. But has slipped my gaze on some things I think.
But thank you again for the info.
To tell the truth, I've been sweating that, thinking there's no way you have to pull all that to replace a seal. My faith in case is restored.
 
The bull gear has to come off to remove the axle housing. Not a big deal. Bend the retaining washer flat and screw off the nut, and the axle assy. will slid right out.
If you replace the outer bearing, you will have to preload the axle bearings. Make sure there is no slop in the bearings if you just replace the seal.
