is the 870 diesel with direct injection better starting than 830 ? does it have a block heater & where is it located ? thanks

Much better starting! If they are in nice shape they will start well below zero with nothing to help. A tank or block heater is easy to add if it doesn't have one.

Jon your zero temps must be different then ours here in Nebraska!!! If it gets down to 20 degrees I plug in the 970,1070 and 1270.1370 starts better but I would'nt start it at zero unless it was plugged in.Just so much easier to start after being plugged in. And it would depend on how long the temp was down to that zero mark too.

Yes they are much better starting. The factory block heater is on the right side of block (sitting in seat) at about #3 cylinder straight up from the starter. If you look at pic #2 you can see the cord hanging down on the starter.

I said it would start, it certainly would be better if it was plugged in tho. Dad bought a new 870 in 70 or 71 and a new 970 in 76 and in both cases when nothing else would start they would. The 970 had a block heater, but it was rarely used because that tractor was not usually started.

I don't know how you could get that much through an 870, and you would have to be really smoking a 970 to do it.
