Electrical Question.

I have a slight dilemma with where to put the battery wire from the alternator on my 300RN. I decided to use a voltmeter instead of an amp. gauge as suggested on this forum. I have the ignition/start switch power coming off the hot side of the starter solenoid. All other things gets its power when ignition/start is turned to the on position. Now I need to know where to put the battery wire from the alternator. Can I attach it to the hot side of the starter solenoid so it can charge the battery from there? The previous owner had everything hooked to the amp. gauge, including the ignition/start switch. The + side of the voltage gauge is too small to attach all those wires to. That's why I had to change things around.

"Can I attach it to the hot side of the starter solenoid so it can charge the battery from there?"

Yes, since you are abandoning the Ammeter and installing a Voltmeter, that would be the normal place to connect the alternator's output wire.

Thanks Bob. Electrical stuff isn't my strong suit. I didn't want to screw up and start something on fire without asking someone first.

When you stop and think, the charge wire goes same path as before, with ammeter leads tied together to eliminate the ammeter, so it still goes from output of alternator to starter solenoid.

- side of volt meter goes to ground, + side of volt meter goes to output of switch, not to hot battery source. You do not want to volt meter to be active when switch is turned off. Voltmeter does not connect to old ammeter connections.

That's the way I understood it.

The two wires from the alternator plug go to the dash too. Where should they attach? I think the one on the right (wire #2) could be attached to the battery terminal of the alternator, but where would wire #1 go?

I recommend putting an in line Fuse link, or heavy duty plug in fuse in the circuit from the alt output. The fuse rating should be 5 amps greater than the Alt output capacity.
(often stamped into the case) This prevents fires and melt down if a Jump was connected wrong, or the output diodes short. Jim

The #1 wire goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot when in the run position. If it is a gas tractor you need an idiot light or diode in line or you may have trouble shooting it off. The #2 wire can go right to the charge stud on the alternator

Thanks for the help.
I have everything hooked up and didn't even start any fires.

Janicholson ,
I'll add a fuse as you suggested. Better to be safe than sorry.

That fuse is normally a "fusible link", that is a short piece of lighter-duty wire in a flameproof casing that acts as a fuse. I guess they have less problems with them melting down for no particular reason as opposed to traditional fuses.

I have used a wireing harness from a jobber that has the connector for a two wire alt with a diode in the circuit that works great.
