SC Case Belt Pulley

I had a Case friend call me tonight about his recently restored SC. Apparently his belt pulley continues to turn in neutral.

I would assume this is not a big issue and might go away with a little use?

I?d guess the clutch is adjusted too tight. With the tractor out of gear and the clutch engaged the belt pully will turn, but when the clutch is disengaged the belt pully should stop. It?s going to grind gears if the belt pully is turning when trying to shift into a gear. There is a belt pully brake that wil stop the belt pully when pulling back on the hand clutch. If the tractor has a foot clutch there is also a belt pully brake that stops the belt pully when clutch peddle is depressed.
Most SC?s had a hand clutch, only the last production tractors, 1954 I believe had the foot clutch. Like I said if the clutch is adjusted too tight it?s not fully disengaging, thus the belt pully still rotates.

Don't overlook the little O5847AB springs that pull the pressure plate off the clutch disk. Usually find these in the bottom of the bell housing when draining. If one is broken the the clutch will drag.

Thanks for your quick replies
I think my friend needs to run that SC for a while to get the oil circulating through that clutch
Thanks again for your thoughts

I?m assuming this has a hand clutch. I?m also assuming that you have to pull back on the clutch lever from the disangaged position to stop belt pully rotation. This is an indication the clutch needs backing off. You can remove the inspection cover on the left side of tractor, depress the plunger and rotate back one notch. This should stop the belt pully from rotating yet still have a good clutch adjustment.
