Confused with my 480CK

I have a 69' Case 480Ck with the 4 cylinder diesel. I removed the injection pump, replaced the shaft seals and top cover gasket. Put the pump back on, bled the lines, getting fuel to the injectors but will not start. I never turned the motor while it was off and I aligned the dots on the shaft and in the pump key way.
My brother in law is a diesel mechanic at an excavation company and he's says it sounds out of time.
I do not understand how this could be? I have no idea if anyone was in this machine before me so the only thing I didn't check was if the dots were line up with pump shaft and key slot when I took if off.
If it was not turned over and nothing moved on the machine, is timing being out even possible?

Yes it is possible. If the shaft on the pump was rotated it could be out of time . If the engine wasn't on TDC at first cylinder it is out of time.

Did you align the pump marks under the two screw timing cover on the side BEFORE removing the pump? I've seen engines with the dots miss aligned on purpose before. Pump MAY need more service anyway, if the reason was fuel into the oil. If the retainer ring is broken inside just replacing the seals won't fix it. Pump timing spec is usually on the valve cover on Case engines, align the pump marks and pull the valve cover. With the pump marks aligned the valve rocker arms will be loose on cylinder one, and on four the exhaust almost closed and intake starting to open IF the pump is timed to engine correctly. If the pump is aligned, but valves rocking on cylinder one INSTEAD of four engine is 180 degrees out of time.

Thanks for the help! I'll go back at it soon as it stops raining. I don't believe the pump shaft moved as I gently pulled the pump off and gently slid it back on. That's why I am confused. I'm now leaning to someone before me may have done something.

Very possible the pump could use a total rebuild but I noticed the some leaking from the linkage shaft last year so I figure I'd place the "top" seals. While doing this, I did an oil/filter change and didn't note and fuel in the oil.

I did not pull the window or bring the machine to TDC as I figure I wasn't rotating anything and the pump/shaft had the alignment dots

That's why timing should be set by the window. There are engines that have been apart before. I ALWAYS check the dots for alignment too, if it ran before, and the dots were not aligned, and you did align them as it should be now it's out of time..

Stopped raining so went at it. Aligned the dots and slid the pump back on and held it with a nut. Turned the motor to DC, pulled the valve cover, verified both #1 valves where open. Turned the motor back to 8 BTC and with a little rotation of the pump I can align the window marks.

I was probably out of time with what ever I could have been with the fine adjustment of the pump flange bolt holes.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and send the pump in for a rebuild. She's always started hard and last year at times shes couldn't barely climb the driveway. I was thinking loss of fuel pressure from the cover/shaft seals.. Pretty sure the flex ring is gone as well because I found a little "turd" in the window when first opened it.

I only bought and use this machine around my property but I need it to run properly when I do need it.

Do you think the pump needs the rebuild to fix the hard starting and loss of power at times or does this sound like bigger problems?

If engine has ever died, then re-started after setting awhile I'll bet the pump needs serviced. I just repaired a JD 4010 pump for the same trouble. If the pump marks are aligned, but both front # one rockers are NOT loose meaning exhaust is almost closed and intake starting to open, then pump is out of time 180 degrees. The # FOUR rockers should be on the overlap with the pump marks aligned, not # one.

I'm sorry I mis-spoke, both #1 rockers are lose and the flywheel is at the DC mark. Loose as in verified space between the rocker arm and valve.
Just spoke to my bother in law and he mentioned now would be a good time while the pump goes out for rebuild, to re-check the back lash on the rockers. Guess I'm on the hunt for the service manual. Going to need those tolerances before I touch anything! (learn my lesson with this pump :D )

Thanks for all your help! will post my results after getting the pump back from rebuild.

I have a 480 also. If you decide to pull the pump for rebuild, now would be a good time to pull the injectors for service also.
Dieseltech rebuilt my pump and injectors who I can highly recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation. I can't seem to PM him to get a rebuild estimate on my DBG Roosa pump. It's already pulled just trying to line up who I'm going to send it to.
