770 Water in oil

Well yesterday I was moving tractors around to start my service for spring. Well when I bought the 770 it had water in the oil. After running it last year the water was gone from the oil and after sitting for 4 months it is back. So now I need to decide whether to do a sleeve and piston overhaul or just pull the sleeves and replace the o rings. So what are your thoughts on this. Jerry from Ohio

That is one of those that till you pull the head off and have a look see hard to say if it needs just simple O-rings or if it need to be rebuilt. Also is it water or is it coolant?? If water it could be condensation and it does not take much water in the oil to make it look bad

We had a lot of weird weather and some very frosty days. You said water, not coolant. If it was just water in the oil, it could have been frost that accumulated inside the engine and it melted. I would change the oil, and run it. If it was antifreeze, you found, pull it down and see what you have.

Loren, At first there was water no color, but as I let it drain anti freeze color showed up , then the oil. So when I get to it I will pull the pan and see if the o rings let the anti freeze in the pan. It is just hard to believe that I ran it all summer and no anti freeze. Like you said the winter can play a big part in it. Thank you for the come back. Jerry

Jerry it is not uncommon for sleeve orings with age to seep a little in frigid temps because of shrinkage. Then when warmer temps come back seepage slows or goes away. My 970 did that for years, I would drain a couple table spoons of coolant out of the oil in the spring and use it all summer with no issues. Rod.

that is pretty much a normal thing to happen in cold weather. that is when leaks show up in weaker units. our nieghbour had a case 700 and he would always crack the drain plug and drain the antifreeze from the pan before using it. he did this for quite a few years. when the tractor is running and warm those leaks usually stop.
as for the sleeves and pistons that is your call as its a hands on visual decision, you can expect at least a set of rings and rod brgs. if doing o rings. but if you want to throw a set of sleeves and pistons in it for just because... no problem either. depends on a persons pocket book. that is my thoughts and way of doing stuff.
