It's Alive Again!

After nearly 20 years this old BK can now move on it's own. Seems to run good but it will be some time before all the issues on this tractor are resolved. I am happy with
the way things have progressed on the front half, now on to the rear half. I have no idea what those yellow letters represent, as they are wrote on the tractor in 4
places. Must be some kind of salvage yard code, LOL. The tractors rebuilt engine had a knock in it until I replaced the injection pump, anyone know why that should be?
Had the same thing occur on 1370 I overhauled years ago and that is why I thought to swap out pumps. Rod.

Experience is often the best teacher. thanks for the post. Will probably never have a tractor with a knock caused by the injection pump, but if I do, just maybe I'll remember. gobble

It would be interesting to know if all cylinders were receiving the same amount of fuel from the pump or if timing was different on one cylinder.

How many hours on the Bosch pump? If high hours the pump MAY have severely worn plunger control sleeves, causing uneven fuel delivery between cylinders. Could also be the internal sixty degree cylinder phase timing is incorrectly set, though not common.

Rod, Looks good. I would be willing to bet that somewhere along the way, that a clamp holding one of the plunger barrels on top of the pump didn't hold when someone tried to remove an injection line and you were getting different amounts of fuel delivered between cylinders.
We had a 1170 that had a very definite ckuning noise at an idle that you could feel if you stood on the draw bar. It turned out that one cylinder was getting far more fuel than the others from this scenario.

Barrels are located in the housing by a pin that enters the barrel groove. The pin CAN be pushed out of place IF some one is not careful and lets the barrel turn when it's lifted above the pin. Barrel can turn, and if forced down it will push the pin out, OR damage the housing. Usually happens when replacing a broken delivery valve gasket between the delivery valve holder and top of the delivery valve. Anytime a delivery valve holder is removed/replaced the secret to making sure the barrel is seated correctly is the watch the holder O ring. Turn it down by hand, well lubed O ring will fully enter the housing taper if barrel is over the pin. If holder stops by hand and O ring has not entered the housing, barrel is definitely setting on top of the pin, instead of pin in the barrel groove.

Loren, we had that happen also on a "1170",customer kept running and eventually we ended up tearing it down for a scored sleeve.

@Rod,
You are going to be a happy camper with a "Black Knight" in your team. Very easy to go to parades with one!

Hi Rod. It is so nice to see that you breathed life into a good ol' Case tractor again. I always enjoy your updates and pictures as well. Thank you for the updates on this tractor sir. Does the rear differential have major issues?

I know Loren, maybe I will get this muff coated or chromed if that is possible. It is a CASE muff and not a Stanley, however is making them for CASE is not putting their name on. Rod.

I sure hope not Kurt, keep your fingers crossed when I pull the PTO out to fix a leak on it. I will be able to see then how much deeper I have to reach in my pockets, Rod.

Thanks for info. I think you hit the nail on the head. Both times I seen this happen has been on a engine I never heard run before I started on it. Both times the pumps had showed signs of people messing with them. It all makes sense, thanks, Rod.
