700 Transmission Fluid?

I was looking at my 700 Operators Manual and it says to put "10w MS" in the transmission.

I thought that sounded a little lite so I checked and a 400 calls for 90w and to thin it with kerosene for cold weather.

We don't get that cold in Oklahoma very often and when we do I won't be driving around without a cab.

Why the change? I was under the assumption that they were the same transmission.

A later chart I have from Case says to use Hytran which is 10w-30.

I don't have a 700 OP. Manual handy, but I think the reference to 10W is for the hydraulic unit in the back. For your 700, for optimum protection of the gears & bearings, use 85W140 in the Transmission-Diff. case, and use "Hy-Tran" or equivalent "Transmission-Hydraulic" fluid in the Hydraulic Unit.

from a 800B ops same oil used just no com on a 700, I would use Hy-Tran myself, others use a variety of oils in these with good results

Tom: Lets discuss this. I believe the recommendations in the 700 800 manuals for the thin oil is actually a misprint. The 400 Op. Manual says to use 90W in the trans-diff.. Obviously then, they did not have 85W140 like we have today. The 400, 700 & 800 are identical in that area, all having separate hyd. reservoirs. We never heard of "Ring & Pinion" problems in tractors until they started using the trans-diff as a common sump for the hyd's and went to the thin oil all the way thru. As for the 800, when the converters get worn & the plates in the back get scored & warped, gear dragging or gear grinding is a problem between shifts. When 85W140 is used in the tranny-diff's of the 800's, because of the heavier gear oil, it tends to help ease the grinding situation. The only problem I can see is maybe a sluggish converter on a cold day until the gear oil gets limbered up some. However, can you honestly say the Hy-tran type oil will offer as much protection to the gears & bearings as 85W140?

Jon: No, the 700's & 800's were like the 400's where the hyd. unit was sealed separately from the tranny-diff housing. The very 1st 730's & 830's also had the separate housings.

We have a 1962 830 COM EH that was bought new by my dad.
This tractor has thousands upon thousands of hours on it. It has had the transmission rebuilt and new plow gears put in it many years ago. The COM has never been touched. This tractor had only type A transmission fluid in since it's first fluid change.

agreed ,,.you guys may recall i was concerned as to what tranny fluid should go in a 1961 E-H 730 . when i got it it looked like 90 wt,. i have since added a couple 3 gallons of 303 in there,. i have slow but sure remote hydraulics and no strength to lift a roundbale on the 3pt..one of these days i will clean the filter and change all tranny fluid to 303 . if that dont help i will change out the hydro blok i got from the good Folks in Liberty Ky .
