A friend of mine has a 900 to run his feed grinder. It has started making a humming noise. I went up to listen to it last night. It hadn't been run in a week. When he started it up it took about a minute or two till the noise began. It's a low pitched hum. It doesn't change with the clutch in or out. We ran the grinder for a few minutes and nothing changed. We are going to run a batch of feed today and see how it goes. I don't know these tractors but it seems to me it could be hyd. pump. I will check fluids today. Is the hyd. fluid and trans. the same or are they separate? Any suggestions what else to look for? Thanks Dave.

Hydraulics and rearend are separate, hydraulic reservoir is relatively small. Fluid level is checked by removing a 1/8 pipe plug located on rh side of reservoir.

Remote valve may not be centering back to neutral, or the oil is thick and has a lot of moisture in it.
Did you find the noise to be coming from the rear of tractor??? Just thinking about noises from a generator, or PS pump.
It could also be a dry bushing on say the long PTO shaft, from the engine. Stationary work would not slosh a lot of oil around and lube that shaft.

I would agree with ACG, most likely someone bumped one of the hydraulic remote levers climbing on/off and it is not centered. My 900 does the same thing when that happens. The remotes are in an unfortunate place, but with the platform and seat design, not much option.

Thank you all for your help. I got a manual from a friend and did a little reading. I went back up to the tractor and checked the fluid level in hyd. res. It took 2.5gal. and now it doesn't make any noise. Thanks again.

I know the 930 had a upper bearing on transmission that wouldn't get oil unless the clutch wasn't engaged. The bearing go oil from another bearing slinging oil on it. Something you might consider.

Are you referring to the pto clutch or the traction clutch ? I was under the impression that for stationary pto work the transmission should be in neutral with the hand clutch engaged.
