Removing oil from brake linings ???

Got the Brakes out of my 530. Linings are oil soaked a little. Someone said to put them in an oven to cook the oil out. Ok guys, I can't use my wife's oven to cook the oil out of the linings, no explanation needed. I've use some brake cleaner but the oil just comes back. Can I burn it off with gas or something. What about Stanisol ?, never heard of it but someone mentioned using it, I honk instead of gasoline? Not sure where to find Stanisol. Dick

Stanisol is a parts cleaner that use to be sold by Standard oil bulk dealers when I was a kid in the 60s. I have bought it from the same bulk plant but not owned by Standard oil anymore. I would just replace the linings. I have tried the heat and rough up technique but not the same as new.

If the linings are riveted on you can use a propane torch the lightly heat the linings to cook the oil out. Then roughen them up with a coarse grade sandpaper. If they are bonded linings I would just douse them with brake cleaner a couple of times, allowing to dry out thoroughly between applications and then roughen them up. I know some guys soak the whole works in acetone, but I would think that would loosen up the bonding material. Good luck!

After replacing the leaking axle seals on my Ferguson TO-35 I used a small LP torch to boil the oil out of the brake shoes. Brakes work just fine now after cleaning the drums well too.

Dick, my son use's some stuff that they use at the dealers where he has worked. It's called Red Hot. Might try Napa or your local car dealer. Supposed to be safe for the environment.

Most bulk plants will have a parts cleaning solvent with a drier in it that will work pretty good for getting rid of the oil. However, if you shop around, it really doesn't cost that much to get things relined....

You can soak them and heat them and do all you want to them. You still aren't going to get it all out. So, either go into it with that knowledge and deal with it or have them relined, which really isn't that expensive.

No wife to cause me grief anymore. Must have cooked out to many brake linings.
I have a little toaster oven. Use it to heat bearings and smoke brake discs. Use where ever you can 110 to it.
I brought my linings back to a good usefulness but many discs are way cheaper now that we have made in china. Don't know about bands. Guess you can by brake band lining from mcmaster.
