2670 powershift problem

I just brought home my third 70 series case powershift, a 2670. I have a 970 and 1370. Upon looking at the 2670, I knew something wasnt just right with the ps, it would shift up fine, but would only downshift if you press the inching pedal. Even if you pulled the shifter back to 1st, nothing happened and when you pushed in the pedal, it felt like the shifter was still in 3rd. I drove it around at the guys house for 2 hrs and couldn't find any other problems. All up shifts were fine, went into reverse fine and sounded fine when I pushed the inching pedal all the way to the floor. I went back and got it, hauled it home, unloaded it, and it was still the same. My little boy wanted to ride it so we took it out through the field a couple of times, I pushed down the inching pedal and it killed the motor, twice. Next the engine no longer stalled, but it sounds like heck when you hold the inching pedal all the way down, or go in reverse. Almost like a bearing is trying to lock up. The tractor has seen little use for the last 15 years as the fuel filters have april 2002 on them. Is this a sticky spool valve or do you guys think its a mechanical issue deep inside?

If it kills the engine 2 clutches are trying to lock up at the same time. When I bought my 2470 it had a bracket broke that is supposed to
kick the lever back when the clutch is engaged. Can't remember, seems like it was under the floor cover...Rod and some of the other guys know
a lot more than I do.

Open the panel under the cab floor. I think the
linkage is rusty/ sticking. You can watch it shift with
the tractor off and see if it moves the spool coming
back.

Thanks guys, I'll check out the valve next chance I get, I figured that would be the best place to start. The racket it makes when I hold the pedal all the way down and while it's in reverse is what has me the most concerned.

The noise you are hearing when pedal down and reverse is
the planetary drum of the rps34 Has had something
probably one of the retainer bolts has popped off and went
through all the planetary gears in the drum which usually
destroys it . Sorry for the bad news

Thanks for the info, what you describe sounds like it could be exactly what's wrong with mine. I'll clean the spools first just cause that's easy. What's so frustrating about it is I only had it home a couple of hrs and maybe drove it around the field for 5 mins and all of a sudden all this weird stuff started happening.

How hard is it to pull the tranny out of one of them. I have a factory service manual for the rps 34 and some good old timer case mechanics not too far from me, I just don't want to pay labor to put it out and in.

After the engine is pulled out you can dismantle the PShift and repair it, yes it does sound like you could have damage to the plant. gears, tough break, Rod.

Thanks for the help Rod, I'm downloading me a service manual right now. Looks like it isn't going to be fun but also doesn't look impossible. I'll keep you guys informed as I tear into it. I may take the ps unit down to my case mechanic and let them do the actual repairs on it and then I'll put it back in. I just hate to do all that work and miss something stupid cause I don't know what I'm doing lol

So I been looking through the manual and I'm slightly confused to how the ps comes out. In my book, it shows the ps coming out as a whole unit on a tractor without a pto. Mine has a pto, and the book shows removing the ps components 1 at a time. It further confuses me because it goes from removing the c-1 and c-4 piston carriers to taking out the planetary assembly. It then goes on to removing the ring gear from the oil distributor carrier and mainshaft. At what point did the c-2 and c-3 clutches come out? I hope it's a little less confusing when I see it in person instead of black and white.

C2 & C3 are inside the planetary drum comes out together,
you will most likely need everything in the drum and including
the drum

You have to raise the frame about 4" above the front axle for the flywheel in clear the axle housing when removing the engine even after taking off the half moon cover

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna need all the help I can get. It always amazes me every time I post a problem on this forum how friendly and helpful everyone is.

Not that I'm trying to beat a dead horse, but I thought I would upload a short video so you guys could hear what the tractor sounds like kinda, it's a little hard to hear the noise over the normal whine of the ps, but you can hear the thumping in the background. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

(quoted from post at 15:32:47 01/23/18) I guess my video is too big to upload sorry [/img]

It’s been a long time coming, but finally today I got to the root of the problem!
