I was told they have them done at Artsway MFG company in Armstrong Iowa. That is strictly hearsay.

It is common to make heavy parts out of low carbon (low cost) steel which will not heat treat. Carburizing and Nitriding are typically used to add carbon to the areas needed to be heat treated.

Flame hardening is generally associated with carburizing because an oxygen-starved flame produces black smoke containing lots of carbon and a lot of heat. The part can quickly be taken out this environment and quenched to make it hard on the surface. Sometimes reheat may be used or more heat added prior to quenching.

Nitriding involves an environment of hot ammonia and flames if any are remote to the part and the ammonia. Hot electric coils work good for heating the ammonia for nitriding.
