970 Case won't move

I bought a 970 Case with Powershift last spring and put a Case 80 loader on it. It has a cab. Before I bought it, the farmer I bought it from had the transmission rebuilt. I checked with the dealer who did the repairs and it checked out plus doesn't have that many hours (probably 100) on the overhaul. It has worked fine until this afternoon. We have had extremely cold weather here in Central WI, but I haven't had to use it for moving snow for probably 3 weeks. I know it takes some warming up to get it to shift out of the first gear when it is cold. It has a block heater. I started it, raised the loader, moved it a foot or so, and then I backed it up. Then it wouldn't move. I let the tractor run for close to an hour with still no luck. Nor will the loader lift or the bucket tilt Any suggestions would be appreciated. Our temperatures today were in the mid-20's. The tractor is in a shed all the time.

Almost sounds like you have water in transmission oil, and it has turned to ice around suction screen, and pump is not getting any oil. Just a guess.

I bet the Disc on the flywheel,Early ones pto,hyd and trans drive through the limiter = luse it you luse every thing ,or filter problem .or as said below .

So what is the solution? Wait until it warms up? Or how do I get at the problem? How do you eliminate the water?

Did the steering still work after all this happened, if it does you lost the hyd set of gears in the pump (sheared key) and the steering set is still operating. If no steering then could be limiter if it is a early 970, or suction screen blockage or complete pump failure, Rod.

I will have to check. I was frustrated enough at the time. After running it almost an hour, it almost showed signs it would move, just a tiny bit.

(quoted from post at 10:14:15 01/17/18) Thanks. Fortunately I don't need the tractor right now and it is pout of the wsy.

Is the transmission full of transmission fluid? Did you check the condition of the hydraulic/transmission oil before, or after, you bought the tractor? My 530's hydraulics won't move up or down when it is low on hydraulic oil. I don't know if the same applies to a 970 or not, but it wouldn't hurt to check. I believe the cold temperatures has a lot to do with your problem. Can you warm up the transmission, other than running it, to thaw any ice that might be in the system? It will take several hours to thaw it out if you decide to try it.

I would not put Rotella anywhere near that powershift oil supply (transmission oil). Hytran is the only oil I recommend for them, ask Brokengun if my word is not good enough.

mEL,
Would Case/IH Trans-Hydraulic be okay with a 970?

I mis-spoke as Case-IH Hydro Tran is what is in it and what I used. Brain wasn't in gear last night.

Should have wrote Case-IH Hydro Tran fluid is in the transmission. Brain wasn't in gear last night. Pardon the pun.

I won't get at things again until next week due to travel. Thanks for all the great information. It gives me a lot to go on and what to do.
