Help with 885 I.D. number

Looked at a DB885 this morning. Front end loader covered the area on the right frame where I understand the I.D. tag to be located. I did however find a number on the right side frame just behind the radiator sheetmetal: 885 163707. The 885 is obvious but the 6-digit number... is it a shortened serial number? Should it read 1101633707 making the tractor a '79 model?

Could be... Have a picture of the number by chance?

Spin on oil filter or a canister type with a bolt in the middle?

Tach say "smiths" or "AC" on it?

No picture but I spent considerable time scratching off the paint and scrutinizing the numbers... maybe I can answer what you want to know?

Have the owner checking on the filter and tach.

Okay, canister type oil filter, tach has DAVID BROWN along the bottom of the face and the letters AC located (in the owner words) in the middle, upper front.

Those stamped numbers on the frame-- are ballpark. 3/8" tall in a Redbird looking font. Due to paint, view angle due to loader and light I could not tell if the numbers were stamped individually ( I think they were but..) or from a fixed type stamp. there is a two to three digit space between the 885 and the 1.

Not a 79, They quit the canister type filter in 1976-77 or so, went to spin on. Possible an older block they had hiding somewhere, but unlikely.

Just as likely the serial number is re stamped when the front frame was replaced.

Why does the year matter? At 40+ years old condition is much more important.

Orange chassis, or brown?

Number is on the frame facing up on the horizontal flat section immediately behind the radiator tin. Was looking for the I.D. plate when I spotted bits of it under the paint.

Orange chassis.

The current owner had never heard of a thermostart and had no idea one was on his tractor. Before seeing if it works... actually asking questions on how to use it it seemed prudent to first figure out what it was I was asking questions about.

On to the thermostart--is it ignition switch activated or is there a dedicated something? Can I tell if it is working by feeling for heat assuming the is power and fuel to it? The owner has no manual for the tractor. IF it becomes mine I will come up with appropriate operator and service literature.

Thermostart is activated by turning the key past run to a spring loaded position half way to "start" The decal on the switch will say "heat".

Not a big deal to fix if it isn't working.

RG, I have an 885 bought new in 1979 and it is a cartridge oil filter. Have a 78 model and it is also not a spin on. Have a 1 owner 1190 with a cartridge oil filter also. So am not sure when they changed them. Now I am confused, Easily done in my case.

All I have encountered after 77 are spin on. The 77 was bought new by my family.

I guess another of those DB mysteries.

When they went to a spin-on filter did they use an adapter or was there a change to the block itself? My 885 serial number dates it as a 1977 and it has the cartridge filter.

Different block. I have thought about making some adapter plates, it would be a pretty simple lathe project. Keeping me from doing it is the fact that the cartridge filter is reasonably enough priced when you buy by the case.

Arlen, does your 1190 use the 1313 filter like the your 885s, or is it a longer filter? The parts books show a longer cartridge type for the 1190/94 but I have never encountered one. I have never had an 1190, but all 3 1194s are the spin on.

RG, different filter # if I remember. Will have to look. Have 2 990's same year. 1 spin on, one cartridge. Go figure.
Kind of like women I guess. Never able to figure them out either.

So... Based on the last four or five posts regarding cartridge vs. spin-on oil filters--there remains a chance the tractor I am looking at could be a '79 still using the cartridge style filter?
