730 ck gas I got almost 2 yrs ago, po had the starter rebuilt just before he sold it. Local shop (big deal, high price) Anyway starter has been acting up, and I always fixed them before so I took it off and into the shop it went to warm up. Looked it all over, new solenoid, new brushes, new springs, new holders, new anchors, armature had been turned. So I looked to the solenoid as the source of the problem. Didn't like the little red washers under the post nuts (delco always used rubber rings). What a CPS!!! Posts are copper plated STEEL. Copper disc was loose on shaft, not making contact hence just a click. Got an old one out of the scrap barrel and pulled the studs and disc out of it and put them in the CPS, Works now. Let the buyer beware.

Even new ones from CNH are of poor quality compared to what was used in the 70's. Looks like we have no choice but to deal with cheaper built items. Rod.

I don't mess with the old slow Delco starters anymore. I put on new Nippondenso reduction gear starters. They work so much better it's not even funny.

I 'member! Chevy pickup just clicks? Crawl under with a hammer while someone else turns the key. Lots of fun in the snow. Guaranteed to happen sooner than later if you have headers, only 60% chance with stock exhaust.
