1030 Maintenance

Happy December everyone! I got my 1030 home from the farm to do some maintenance on it, I have owners, parts, and service manuals on the way, should be here Thursday. What are the most important things to get done? I've already changed the oil I put in straight 30w diesel oil. I want to change the trans and hyd oil as well and will do that when I get the books. Are there any things you case gurus know about that are important to get done? And help would be amazing! Thanks so much in advance!!

Thanks, Ryder.

Hello Ryder,

Change the hydraulic filters along with the oil, change all the diesel fuel filters, make certain you have a clean radiator, both inside and out to keep in operating temperature range. Typically the brakes need work, check for broken springs, brake dust, etc. You may need new brake discs. We replaced the ball bearings with bigger diameter and it helped the braking situation. Check the batteries and cables/connections. Good Luck! Don

Hey don! Thanks for the info I will be sure to do that! one quick question I have is where is the temperature sending unit? All my gauges work accept my temp. I know my coolant is low and needs to be filled up. is the sending unit on the top of the radiator? if not I may need to get a new unit/gauge. Also I've been trying to clean up the old cab and am wondering if there is any way to make it a little quieter? will changing the trans oil eliminate some of the noise? What is a good headliner material? Thanks again!

Ryder.

How about the air filter? A rubber mat on the floor board will help absorb some of the noise.Upholstery on the sides and the top will help a bunch too.Maybe an extension on the muffler to get the exhaust and noise above the cab.Check the power steering oil level too.Very dependable tractors if taken care. I use mine for piling and feeding round bales.

IIRC the sending unit is in the water manifold that distributes the coolant to the heads. Changing the hydraulic oil will typically not quiet down a noisy tranny/rearend. Many years ago there was a product called Wynn's Frictionproofing that claimed to quiet down gears. I don't know if you can still get it or not. Cab insulation will help a lot. Not sure where to buy it in bulk. Don

Thanks everyone! just F.y.I, I got the tractor a few months ago,its a late 1030 (8 speed) kinda new to the whole case side of things (Im a massey guy myself, somehow my son talked me into buying this thing!!) The previous owners had little respect for upkeep on it. Hoping its not in too bad shape, i'm thinking about running Lucas oil additive in it as well as the fuel additive in the diesel. Im buying a new muffler as the one on it is nothing but a enlarged straight pipe haha :) I know the A451D engines are prone to cracking heads and praying I don't have one. I've also noticed its very cold blooded, is that anything fixable or just the nature of the beast? I really appreciate the help you guys! keep it coming haha :D

I think most Case people would agree that 1030's have a reputation of hard starting. One Case collector I know says, "If you walk past a 1030 with a SnowCone they won't want to start." When we got ours it would not start below 65 degrees w/o being plugged in. After putting in new valves and guides, rebuilt injectors, installing 2-1100 CCA 12 volt batteries, new cables and rebuilt starter, and rehooking the manifold heater it will start pretty easily down to 35 degrees w/o being plugged in.

Our 1030 was going to be scrapped before we rescued it from a neighbor. It was used pretty hard, with little maintenance, but now is a dependable old brute we use quite a bit and we really like it. I hope you enjoy yours as well. Don

Ryder: You mention hard starting, but I see you put Straight 30 weight oil in the engine. In a cold climate, that is too heavy. 15W40 year round is a far better choice. When your 1030 was built, 15W40 was not available. Why do people want the most advanced medical technology for themselves, but stick with 50 year old technology for their equipment? Contrary to what has been said about 1030's starting hard, that is not my memory when they were new, and if they do start hard, something needs attention. 2 premium Group 30 or 31 batteries are a must!! My experience with a hard starting CASE diesel is that I found the valves "pounded" in. I have also seen bad valve jobs where the valves & seats were ground, thus recessing the valves in the head, lowering compression, guaranteeing a hard starting CASE diesel.

You are correct in stating that 1030's are prone to block & head cracking. 2 things will do that. Overheating & ether.

Don't forget to put on new fan belts and the proper gripper type power steering belt. There is a replaceable filter in the ps canister also. They steer nice with proper belts.

I don't think I saw anyone comment on the water pump, grab the fan, if there is more play then usual, I would get the replaced ASAP. If its fine, don't over grease

Not sure if you have checked close, but the 1030 I have has 2 hydraulic filters on it. One is an element and then a spin on under platform tucked up tight.

Might depend on year and version. Mine is a 69 Western. Element under fuel tank on right and spin on left side against back of battery box. Not the easiest to get to. Scott

15/40 not is and never will be as good as 30w when hot, Case called for 30 all the way to the 94's and that isn't that many years ago, also some people like 1030's suffer from cracked heads so beware of the advice you get on here!

@Brutus49dc, Doug, I have found a lot of good information here, and "friendly" advise, tell me Doug, do you have a chip on your shoulder, it seems you always have some type of snide remark.

A lot of water has gone over the dam in the over 30 years since the 94's were built. Technology has come a long ways since then. Remember, over 90% of engine wear occurs on startup, hence the reason for multi-weight.

(quoted from post at 19:39:18 12/12/17) 30w is correct and DO NOT mix other oils (ie;85/140) with the trans-draulic fluid

Are the transmission/hydraulic fluids the same reservoir? Good to know about the oil. How much do heads run these days? are they just outrageously expensive or not that bad?. I really appreciate the help guys :D Merry christmas!!!

Yes, the tranny/hydraulic fluid is common to both. Do not run it low on fluid as that can lead to transmission damage. Heads are in the 450-600 dollar range. Good Luck! Don
