Bad engine rings

Hi guys. I'm starting the restoration process on my grandpa's 1947 vac case. The motor had been over hauled before my dad quit farming, but at some point it sat outside and got water in the engine. The engine was broke loose and is now running, but burns oil. Has great oil pressure and runs fine. If possible, I want to put new rings in it. Is it possible to do with the engine in the tractor and what is the best way to do this. I appreciate all suggestions and help you can give. If do get the pistons out, how do I know what size rings to buy? I'm sure I will have plenty of questions as I tear it apart. Thanks in advance.

You say it has great oil pressure and "runs fine".

Work the snot out of it, pull it, use it, and LEAVE IT ALONE unless you know what you are doing. And, apparently, you don't, or you wouldn't be posting here, seeking approval from GURUS for newb to tear stuff apart.

Put some Seafoam in the crankcase, and a can of Seafoam in the gas tank, then put the tractor to work. The Seafoam will help loosen up the rings and clean the fuel system. If nothing else take it for a ride down the road 4-5 miles and back to the farm. That is if it's warm enough to do so.

Bob is somewhat like me. He doesn't beat around the bush and waste time and words. The original poster asked a grown up question, and got a grown up answer.

Pull the pan and cyl head and pistons will come out. If eng was stuck due to water, rings will probably have to be chipped of piston in pieces.

just hope the kid comes back to listen in and learn ,,..the new generation (at least my kids )is so easily offended and uniformed and taught by fools in the education system ,. ,,one offense !>>?? and they are quick to push the button that blowsup the relationship , the car , the job , the marriage ,family or in n Koreas mind THE WORLD ..,,. i dont like to put it in engine oil ,. but in this instance it is sorely needed ,.seafoam like L fure,,,is the best bet .

Work it hard! Years ago I had an SC operating the same way. I put an 8' double wheel disc on it and had the front end in the air for several hours. I had to put on a brimmed cap, almost right away as the carbon/crap came out of that exhaust glowing, it cleaned out, and now runs well. In this case it was years of very light work that led to this condition, but I sure would give it a try before tearing it apart.......... And keep asking, there is NO SUCH THING as a stupid or bad question, only in not asking is there a problem

Fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a week or 2. Drain the oil out of the pan after you do that and then after a week open the drain plug up and see how much ATF you get out of the oil pan. If your lucky you will have almost as much as you put In the cylinders and if you do then fil it up with oil and fire it up and se if that helps. If the ATF seeps past the rings it will or should free up the rings if there stuck on the pistons.

Bod wasted his time and words to insult the poster. Instead of insulting someone he doesn't know he should have tried a few words of encouragement.

Maybe there should be a new category for some of you guys. My vote is for "Tractor Elite", or Tractor God.

Agree to let it soak with the products people have suggested. If that doesn't work get a manual before you take anything apart. If you are young and just learning that is great. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work on that engine. Did I mention to get a manual and read it. lol. We all weren't born master mechanics or master machinist. You'll have to learn from mistakes and or people giving you advice and your manual. Probably shouldn't have spouted off but oh well.

I don't have any additional advice, but just wanted to thank you for taking an interest in your Grandpa's Case tractor. Not too common these days. Good Luck with it! Don

No worries. I have thick skin. I enjoy people telling me I can't do it. I can only learn by doing it. I farm and try to fix everything I can. This is a project to do for fun. The tractor is only used to move wagons and on the sprayer. Do you guys think sea foam would still work since it happened 20 years ago. The tractor was broke loose and has pretty much sat since. Thanks again.

ATF is more likely to help then any thing else. Also when you run it after socking it with ATF run it with 1 quart of ATF in 3 or so gal of gas that will also help free up rings etc.

Good for you, yt!

If you are willing to learn and follow through that's GREAT news.

I have seen so many tractors and vehicles that at least RAN torn apart never to run again by newbies who started out with good intentions, only to proceed in an unorganized fashion and then lose interest.

If you have the dedication to learn and stick with it and follow through, that's WONDERFUL, vs. quickly tearing into it and making it worse/less useful than before.

And no matter WHAT help or advise you need, there's someone here who's "been there, fixed that" who'll take the time to help you.

Hey Young,

If you need a factory case manual. i will donate one too help get a young man started in the right direction.

Send me an email with your address and i will send you one.

Old,
I have to disagree with you about ATF being the only thing that will work for a situation like this. I wasn't a big believer in the mechanic in a can aditives that are advertised as the cure for anything wrong with internal combustion engine. That is until a friend told me about Seafoam. I was skeptical about his claims, so he gave me a can and told me to give it a try. I figured since I didn't have anything to lose I'd give it a try. I found out that it does just what it is advertise to do. One thing I learned about it is if faced with a worse than normal problem it will work better if you overdose the Seafoam to get it to work faster. I keep six cans of Seafoam in my garage/shop at all times. I use it more for general maintenance since I cleared up a lot of problems using it in the past. I pour a can in my trucks gas tank after about the second or third tank of gas. It really helps improve the performance of the engine by doing this. Sorry for such a long posting, but I can never say enough about how well this stuff works.

Hey YT: Keep us posted on your progress. Come back and post any CASE questions anytime. Most of us appreciate the opportunity to help. Some of the old pharts on here get cranky when their wives refuse them and take it out on the rest of us, but they still have a lot to offer. I should be thinking about retirement, spent many thousands of $$$ on tuition @ the "School Of Hard Knocks" and still have not got my diploma yet, and I'm still learning. Good luck!!

Well I have tried sea foam and I did not like it and the cost was well 2 or 3 times that of ATF. So being as it is cheaper and seem to at least in the times I tried it I'll stay with the ATF

LOL ..John . dammedif You didnt hit the nail on the head about the wife refusing Us ol pharts wart heads ,.. lol,,,,,,, and consequently we wanna take our frustrations out on the young buck with lots of hope and Zeal ,Ohh Shammey Shameie ,..LOL ..golly how in this world are some of us mean seasoned guys ever gonna get to Heaven someday when we act like we are a quarter turn off from the animal kingdom ,.. Worse yet is if the wife is feeling young and frisky, and you don't notice, because you're too busy messing with your tractors. Payback on that mistake can go on for a long time.
