DB 990 clutch release bearing

Hi, I am looking at a 990 that needs a release bearing. Just wondering how big a job it is. I heard that it can be done without splitting the tractor??Also, I have a similar 990 already with 6 speed trans, hi/lo and 1 2 3 R levers. This one has a third lever forwardof theother two. What is it?

You have to split the tractor as far as I know, don't see how you could get around it. The 3rd lever is an additional hi-low range gear, most call it the "creeper gear". It's great for transplanters and whatnot, but you aren't supposed to use it in low for real heavy pulls as it's not as well supported as the regular hi-low range set up. It's handy for getting just the right speed when baling or mowing though.

A six speed can be done without splitting, but requires more work to not split than to split. A 12 speed like the one you are looking at needs split. A 990 has got to be the easiest tractor out there to split. I have done a clutch job on one in under 4 hours including coffee breaks.

Regarding the question about the third gear lever: Open up this link and turn to page 9 of the manual (Note that it is page 11 of the pdf). There is a paragraph there that explains the third gear lever. Paragraph continues on to page 10.

Regarding the 990 split: Yeah, its easy, but I had to stumble through the first couple of splits I did, as I was unfamiliar with the tractor. I still prefer to remove the fuel tank and the top of the clutch housing. That adds considerable time to the process. Follow the steps in the manual and you will be ok. You should be able to find the manual for free on this website:
