Hardened cotter pins

I?m changing out the sprockets on the DC for speed.
The manual says not to reuse cotter pins in the chains.
It always bothered me that I reused the ones on my SC
conversion.
It also says use hardened steel pins.
I see no such spec on any of the 1/8? cotter pins available?
Am I making too much out of this?
I?m guessing it?s not important which type steel or say
stainless but more importantly using new ones?
Any thoughts?

I buy Good HD ones at Fastenal here,, like many things in cotter pins there is a difference,, you need the ones you cannot bend with out a tool,,

The reason you do not reuse cotter pins is that they lose their strength as you spread them out ,and pull them together to remove them. They are cheap enough. Replace them with new.
