Plowing with the 430

Had a chance to plow a few acres with the 430 today. This gutsy little tractor did well in some tough conditions. Difflock and draft o matic helped a lot and a bit of front weight would have been helpful.

2-16 BER plow, would pull it good in second and third in low range. I tried to include a pic of the plow but it would not load, Rod.

Nice looking 430! And I am jealous of that nice black dirt. The plow should pull easy in that. When my sweet corn field expires every summer I hook my little 3 bottom Oliver plow to our diesel 430. As you can see we have our 430 weighed down a bit more (I know on this forum you all of you know what the outside wheel "weights" are). It is nice to see someone else plows with a 430. Ours been on our farm since 1971 when dad bought it new. They are a tough little unit.

FYI: I am new to registering and posting on the forum, but longtime reader. I feel I already know everyone on the Case forums. I enjoy the friendship and support between everyone.

Hello Dan,

Welcome to the Case Forum! Our 430 looks similar to yours, still in working clothes. We just love that little machine and use it almost daily for some odd thing. Don

Glad you gave the little guy some exercise. The definitely are snotty little guys. Still can't get used to seeing the muffler come out of the hood where yours does though.
If you want to try one that will blow your hat off, you will have to drive my 431 Turbo. triple range. I can start out on the road in 12th and you can feel and hear the turbo spool up till you are going 32mph up the road. It has 14.9x26 wheels and tires off a 660 combine on it.
The 2 post canopy that I am fabricating for it is coming along well now. Starting on the grill guard this afternoon.

Our soil is black like yours is. Works up real easy, but will not scour a rusty plow. You have to have well scoured moldboards to get the soil to roll over.

Loren I sure would like to hop on your 430 and take her for a spin, 32 mph are you kidding, I had no idea those little guys had those tall of gears. Looking forward to seeing that canopy completed, Rod.

Hi Don, most of or soils are black and heavy. They also hide a few rocks, when plowing with the 430 I hit a rock that will require running the 580 out, looks to be slightly larger than a basket ball. Rod.

Rod,

You most likely will not believe this but the year when we switched from an Oliver trailer plow to an IH 710 Auto reset we picked 23 hay wagon racks of stones. It was awful. Don

I had an uncle that had rocky land like that. His sons are still farming it. When we were kids we would spend our weekends picking up rocks. The larger ones would have to be removed with their DC with an old New Idea loader on it. He ruined a lot of plows on that ridge. He bought every three bottom plow he could get his hands on in the area.

Wow Don that is a lot of stones. I will never complain about the couple bucket full that I pick-up yearly again, lol, Rod.

I spent a good portion of my youth on a worn out case 430 diesel with the cheapest of all options 4 speed tranny in the late 1970's and early 1980's of Dad's. That tractor would easily do 26 mph on the road and was easily by far the fastest tractor dad, uncle or grandpa owned in the fleet.

The tractor was worn out when we bought it (former state/county mowing tractor). That all said it was an absolute fuel miser as I never seen a tractor that sipped fuel like that one and it was a gutsy SOB nonetheless and always easily outworked its meager 34 PTO hp rating. I can only imagine operating one that was not already worn out from the get go like ours was.

Well Rod, it looks like your just plain having fun! I would have loved to take a round on her. Yes nice black dirt, fun having it and no rocks.
Thanks for sharing
