information question on exhaust manifold

As I mentioned in an earlier posting I am working on a 56 VAI I recently picked up.

Today I pulled off the exhaust manifold and discovered there must be a half of dozen or better cracks in the exhaust manifold, some going about half way around the manifold. In addition there are 2 holes in the manifold and about a dozen spots or so where it was welded previously.

Is it normal for the exhaust manifold to crack that much and what would cause it? I am going to replace the manifold but am just curious.

thanks

That will happen when they get old, it's why it's so hard to repair a manifold. When they get old there usually is not much left to repair.

There can also be cracks all over it when brand new. Sometimes they can have so many impurities in the iron they will crack especially if they allow them to cool too fast. Just don't make the mistake I did trying to electric weld one like that. The iron will just burn instead of having the nickel bond to it. If you ever have one repaired have someone braze it.

Brazing cast iron is a bad idea, especially if it's likely to get hot. Welding it can be done, by an expert with the right equipment. Not by a hobbyist with a buzz box. New is always good, but not always possible, after all this is the antique tractor spot. Wish you luck.

Is it different than a VAC manifold? New ones are available.

Brazing a manifold won't hold for long. Manifold will get hot enough to melt the brass welds.

Cast iron repair is quite possible with some practice and
proper procedure . First leave the arc weld on the shelf,
2nd brazing is a temporary repair because of the difference
in the expansion rates of cast and braze. in time they will
pull apart. 3rd use acet/oxy with cast iron in stick form
and cast iron flux , many times you will need preheat to
1200 deg F and very slow cool. Most things are repairable.
here are before and after photos of a 1920's waukesha in
an old IR compressor.

There is no way an exhaust manifold will get hot enough to melt a bronze repair. Brazing cast iron, in most cases, is the best repair that can be done. The old burned out VAC manifold should be replaced though. The metal in these manifolds were of poor quality to begin with, and fifty years of use didn't do them any good either.
