head gasket on 1956 vai

I picked up a 56 VAI, that was smoking a far amount and was lacking on power. I pulled the head and the head gasket between 2 and 3 cylinders was burned away and the valves on number 3 cylinder are badly carboned.

What would cause the gasket to burn away that way and what should I be checking before I put it back together to make sure it does not happen again.

Also I noticed that the sleeve on number 2 cylinder has some small rough spots. Could I get away with just lightly sanding the rough spots. I use the tractor only for mowing, it will not get hard usage.

thank you for any and all input

You should take it to a shop and have the valves and seats ground, and have it checked to see if it's warped.

Also you need to check the sleeves' standout. Pic is 300 series 148, I think the VA 124 is the same or similar height.
