6v to 12 volt conversion

I wrote awhile back about the VAI I just bought in which they tried a conversion to 12 volt. What they did was run the positive connection off the battery to the starter switch and from there they went to the starter and the coil directly and from the coil to the distributer, and negative from battery to ground. All other wires they removed including the wire from the generator.

It has been running ok, today I had it running and it died. In checking it out I had 12 volts at the coil, however the coil was extremely hot, it is warped and it appears that there is oil on it and coming from it. The coil is labeled 12 volt but an external resistor is required.

My question is this just a coil that has gone bad or is there something else that I need to put into the wiring, or should I change how it is wired, if so, how should it be wired?? Thank you for any and all help.

If the coil reads external resister needed and there is not one you may get lucky and just have a bad coil or you may also have bad points to boot. So if it did not have a ballast resister wire in you need to either buy a coil that says no external resister needed or one and a ballast resister. Me I would get a coil that does not need a resister that way you have one less part to go bad. I would also check the points before you go to buy the coil to make sure there not burnt

If the points are ok, will just changing the coil be ok and the rest of the way that it is wired will be ok? that you so much again

If the point are ok and it has run like it should yes changing the coil to one that says no external resister needed should fix the problem
