The real ones were made out of cast iron. The reproduction ones were made of concrete.
 
There are cast iron re-pro's. I do not know how to tell the difference between the originals & these re-pro's.

I didn't know about the cast iron replicas. That makes it a lot harder to find an original.
 
Measure around the globe. If an original is used for a pattern the reproduction will be slightly smaller. When cast iron cools it shrinks about 1/8" / foot. I do not know the measurements. Also the feet on some of the reproductions are solid rather than hollow.
