I was at a sale today and took a look at this old canabilized DC

That is quite a patch high on the manifold side of the block!
Someone did a good job. That?s the biggest one I?ve ever seen.

I have a SC Case that has a patch the whole left side of the block. They used 1/4 " hex bolts...has never leaked a bit. Had a DC that I overhauled a few years ago that the rings were wore very bad. Found a 3/8" hole on the back side of the cast iron air cleaner. Must have sucked a lot of dirt thru that poorly made casting. The oil in the cleaner should have caught it, but maybe not.

Cracks in the block of D series Case tractors is a common site. I bought a 1950 DC that had a crack in the block that was six to seven inches long. I had planned on driving it home, but was afraid the radiator would go dry before I got there. My Dad was with me at the time, and told me to get the engine warmed up while he went to town to get something to stop the leak. What he bought was a can of ground ginger. He dumped it in the radiator and told me to head for home. The crack stopped seeping about a mile down the road. It never leaked all the time I owned the tractor.
