300 Throttle Free Play.

I got the 1956 300 home early this afternoon. I have a few things to correct before I put it to work. The first thing on my list is the throttle lever free play. I can move the throttle lever about a third of the way before the engine speed reacts. I won't be able to see what's going on until I remove some tin to give me access to throttle linkage. What are my chances of having a broken roll pin on one of the levers?

The governor linkage is also out of adjustment, and has the wrong spring on the governor rod (G11203) to governor lever (VTA850). I actually found the correct spring in the tool box. The one on the governor rod now is too strong.
 
Probably not a broken roll pin if it works at all. More likely just worn linkage. Please post a pic once you get it undressed. Not unusual for some wayward soul to put a heavier spring on a governor, they think it's free horsepower. Good thing you caught it, over-revving these motors was not a good idea even when they were new.
 
I have been looking at the play in the lever on my 312 and I think that the correct spring would help but have not gotten back to it.
 
Check the support piece G1077 that the friction disc rides on. Support can break right at the steering shaft if the friction disc area binds up.

I have the governor issue working better. The governor rod (G11203) and the control rod guide (VT403) were gummed up with fifty years of grease hampering it's movement. The stronger governor spring was probably someone's answer to that problem. I removed those parts and cleaned them up. The governor rod adjusting nuts (V20301) were screwed all the way out to the end of the governor rod. This caused the governor to not control the high rpm of the engine. I screwed the nuts back to the other end. I'll adjust the full throttle rpm with a digital tachometer later. I sure hope this didn't damage the connecting rod and main bearings. The engine still has good oil pressure, so I'm going to take that as a good sign.

The throttle free play looked to be the nature of the beast. Everything looked okay, but a little stiff at the pivot points. I sprayed everything with some lubricant hoping that will help loosen things up. I might remove the battery pan sometime later to get a better look at things. I didn't want to fight the rusty battery pan screws today.
