I am not a gear head. How do I find someone to help me get this engine running smooth. Belleville Michigan.
Tried : new fuel filter, bleeding, clean fuel tank, rebuild injectors, checked auxillary fuel pump. SAME I think it is timing, beyond my skill set.

May be time for injection pump service, confirm by trying this. Take loose the two screw timing cover plate on the side of the pump housing, allowing fuel to leak out. Start the engine, if it acts OK with the fuel leak, but runs rough and/or dies again when the screws are tight so the leak stops, injection pump needs repair. Just finished an IH 856 pump for the same trouble..

Are you still doing repairs on these for people by chance? I do have a couple that need some work, some major but one is leaking fuel around the throttle shaft I think, would it be ok to email you about working on one or more? thanks

Yes sir, still repairing older pumps in my semi retirement. Feel free to E-mail, [email protected] or call five seven four eight three five 3292. Texts are OK too, if no answer leave a message, don't hear the phone if the test stand is running..

hi sorry to interrupt your thread, but I wonder if you could help me,, I have a 188 in a 1961 630 I done head, bearings, rings and injectors,, I know it is timed right, but I cannot get fuel out of pump,it hadn't ran for 3 years,,i took top off of pump and didn't look too bad, cleaned it.i guess it needs to be rebuilt.i'm in the west..do you know of a company to rebuild it who is reasonable in price.,,thanks in advance J

Thanks for the tip on checking the injector pump, will try.....but I must humbly ask. How will creating a fuel leak make the engine "act ok"?

The way that pump works, the opposed plungers won't move during the charging cycle IF the housing pressure equals the charging pressure. Plungers move out during charging, cam ring lobes force the plungers in by the shoes/rollers during injection cycle to each cylinder. When the weight retainer ring fails, the housing pressure will increase with the bits of the failed ring blocking the return side. With the timing side cover loose, and fuel leaking out is the quick check to confirm what's wrong. There may also be some small bits inside the side cover gasket that look like coffee grounds, of the broken retainer ring.
