VAC keeps killing coils

ABout once a year I have to replace the coil on my 51 VAC. Points look good and capacitor is good. Running fine and then either totally dead or runs a minute and dies depending on the coil. It ran on the old coil that came with it for for eight years and I am now replacing the coil for the 4th time. what else to check. Still 6v pos ground and the + side of the coil going to the distributor. sourcing coils from Carquest.

"You have the coil hooked up backwards"

NO, he doesn't. And, even if he already did that wouldn't explain premature coil failure.

To the O.P.... a couple of things to check... point gap set too narrow causes longer dwell and more coil heating.

A bad sparkplug wire(s) or coil HT wire, or a cap or rotor issue that causes the spark to have to jump an excessive gap causes more strain on the coil. Check for the carbon at the center terminal of that cap and that the cap and rotor aren't mismatched.

Matt.....On negative ground system, the battery "hot" wire goes to the (+) side of coil, and the (-) side of the coil goes to the distributor. The opposite is true when it is a positive ground system. In this situation, he has it hooked up properly.

Where are you buying the coils from??? If form TSC or other such China parts stuff that is your problem. Buy a good brand of coil and if you have an O'Reilly's auto parts store get one from them and pay the little extra so you have a life time warranty on it. The only other reason it might be going bad is if your charging system is putting out way to many volts but that could/should also cause battery problems if it is charging and putting out to many volts
