311B Stuck in Gear...

Hey all while playing with my subsoiler yesterday, the 311B with triple range got stuck in 1st Gear Low Range. The stick moves freely forward and back, so I am guessing something is worn and slipped out of place. I tried removing the shifter cover to see what is up and I cannot get it to come up more than an inch or so. From what I can see, it looks like the forks may be getting hung up on something. I stopped before I broke something and figured I had better ask the experts! Is there a trick to getting that cover off?

Thanks in advance!

Nick

I'm interested in the out come of your predicament. I have a case 610B and when the gear shift became loose and would not shift gears, I noticed that someone had left "OUT THE DOWEL" that positions the Gear shift cover properly over the transmission housing. Once I installed the Dowel the Gear Shift never again came out of alignment.

You need to get a long screwdriver or flat bar in under the cover and move the rail to the neutral position. The rail is hung up in the trans web and cover will not come off until you get things in neutral.

I was able to stick a screwdriver under the cover and slide the forks to what I thought was the neutral position, and the cover did slide right off. The tractor is still in gear though as when I rock it, the gears move, and when I start it and engage the hand clutch, the tractor moves forward. Attached is a pic of the gears. Which location is neutral?

Also attached are some pix of the forks and rails. It appears someone has been in here before as the reverse fork has been welded. I also noticed there is wire running through 2 of the 3 lock screws. Is this the way it is supposed to be? Is the missing wire on the reverse fork my problem? This is my first time in this portion of the tractor so I am looking for the knowledge!

Thanks!

Nick

Put your shifter in the neutral position. Hold the shifter in alignment directly about mounting position. Move the sliding collars so they line up in mating position with the forks and the transmission should be in neutral.

The fork lock screw tightens into a notch in the rail, if it is tight the fork can't move on the rail. It should have a lock wire but the missing wire isn't an issue if the screw is still tight.

Read the following pages from the service manual. Check out the mesh lock springs, interlock plugs, and rails notch wear.

Thanks Joe, I love how you have all the pictures of seemingly every issue I have had with my 311B, that is such a huge help! Thank you for the detailed explanation.

I will get after it this weekend!

The larger sliding gear is almost against the casting indicating it is in 4th gear, pry the gear back till the shaft turns freely without trying to drive the tractor, it would be in your best interest to check those interlock detent slugs as enough wear there can allow two gears to engage ay the same time.
