SC shifter rubber boot question

Putting on a new rubber boot on the shift rod for my '53 SC. Old one was dried out and contorted. When I pulled the old one off it left a, "ring," beneath it. Consists of two stamped rings, tack welded together to form something akin to a tire rim. i.e., concave both sides, and a channel around the perimeter which looks like it will accept the bottom larger portion of the new boot to snap over. My question is: what really holds the boot assembly down against the transmission casting?? Gravity? Or am I missing a piece?
I was expecting to see a flange built onto the base such that it would grip the boot and hold it tight.....water proof even...maybe. Not so?

Ring that came off had traces of Case color on it, so must be factory part. My parts book shows shift shaft, etc., but not clear enough to see what parts are there.
Thoughts appreciated,

Yes. It confirms exactly what I have. However, is that top ring with the groove ATTACHED in any way to the bottom stamped piece you show that has the 2 mounting holes?????? The groove in the top ring should accept the lower opening of my new boot to, "snap," into it and that, at least, is secure.
The 2 pieces you show are NOT attached in my situation and it seems odd to me. OR, they were once factory welded and came apart, in which case I need a new, "set," like you show......permanently mated.
This is clearing up....but slowly.

I just put a new one on mine, the new boot should snap over the upper ring. I suggest dabbing a touch of grease around the bottom of the boot to help with the install. Good luck.

Thank you. Good idea about grease, was thinking about that too.
But the real question I'm trying to solve is that ring you mentioned lifted right off the tractor when I pulled the dried, sloppy old boot off. Just the ring. Period. I'm beginning to think it's really supposed to stay ATTACHED to the tractor. I'm also beginning to think mine broke off from the part below the boot that is attached to the tractor with two bolts.
If that's the case, (pun), I'll need to find a used part to replace my broken one.

I just turn the boot inside out and then slide over the shifter shaft to the bottom then simply turn the boot back right side out and make sure it is over the lip, yes sounds like you need a replacement cover
