Want to know everything about a VAC Case

Title says it all. I have a chance to pick one up for $1000. New paint and good tires.1949 model with wide front. Don't know much about it. I want to know the good, the bad and the indifferent. Also want to know the pattern failures ( if any) on these tractors and what to look for and what to watch out for. Just looking for something to play in the garden with.

Thanks, Sod Buster

I have a 49 VAC. Don't really know of any shortcomings. Mine pulls a 2/16s trailer plow easily. More powerful than they look.

Had one years ago.decent little tractor but very low on power.Doesen't have nothing like the power of a C Allis Chalmers or Farmall C.The horsepower is suppose to be about
the same, but not even close. You couldn't shoot it out of a cannon and pull 2 x16's with it.

Keep a close check on your transmission differential fluids. Leaking axle seals can let your trans. gears run dry with not good results. Also don't grind them into gear, let it slow down and stop and then pull them in. I've replaced gears in the transmission, reverse idler and 3rd. so just want to pass on the knowledge. A tough tractor that pulls bigger than it looks. gobble

Does it have Eagle Hitch? This adds value and was Case's answer to Fords 3pt hitch. They are good little tractors. The pto gears can break when bush hogging,a slip clutch will stop this when added to the pto drive line.

The VAC-14 is my favorite of the series. This is mine pulling a 7 ft Case Eagle Hitch disc and Case 8 ft roller.

Then you had a miserable problem with your engine. This one also powers a T-15 Case feed mill and grinds corn at many Case shows.Mine has plowed along with a Allis and pulled faster at the same plow depth as the Chalmers.

Thanks for all the replies.Called about another Vac today a different tractor. runs good but guy said hydraulics dont work but price on this one is $750. Not sure how much it would take to get hydraulics working. He claims the filter is plugged. According to the internet the filter is a fairly straight forward thing to change. Makes me wonder why he didnt change it...... Any way thanks again keep replies coming Im still doing my home work. Sod Buster

Then yours had a worn out engine or other problem.

Have to agree with case collector I have a vac on a 6ft belly mower for my lawn. Used it for 20 years and had to overhaul it. With a fresh engine I don believe a C farmall or C allis would want anything to do with it.
