Case 870 8 spd shifting to road gear...

Good day,
Need some advice. Just got the 870 up and running. In process of securing parts to fix up. Will need to do a road move to get it my acreage... have always had powershift tractors - 1370 and 1570 long ago and now my 970. Shift to 4th and go - powershift to 3rd and road speed.
Do you shift on the fly from 2nd high to 3rd high to 4th high? Start in 3rd high? Start in 4th high?
Just re-abilitating her so am not sure what would be normal...

This will be no load start/transport and don't know the shape of the clutch overall.
But also read no synchromesh in 4 speed so probably a handful to shift on the fly... Will give 3rd high to 4th high a try
Option B I guess is 4 low to get moving then shift to high in the two speed.
Make more sense?

Brian: I taught all our kids to shift everything from the DC, 730, 1175 & trucks by double clutching. Because of the reverse idler in the tranny of the 8 speeds, you cannot shift into 6th, (2nd high) but you can come out of it. We start out at an idle in 6th, she will not stall, rev to about 900 - 1,000 RPM, into neutral, quick double clutch, loose hand on the lever & she will drop into 7th, back up to about 1,000 RPM, out of 7th, double clutch & into 8th, then throttle wherever you want. Your right hand needs to be in synch w/ the left foot. If you cannot get the knack of double clutching, save the tranny & start out in 8th. Cheaper to replace the clutch than the gears.

Thanks for the tip. Had to double clutch the old 3 tons (1951 International Harvestor and the 1948 Mercury) under full load in hopes of getting a clean shift.
The standard pattern on this should make this easy to follow.
My 970 has the weird pattern in the powershift where 1 and 3 and then 2 and 4 are on the same throw...
Just had that last second thought about shifting the low to high.
Can't find em... grind em is not the solution as I don't want to open a transmission. Clutch if needed but not a transmission.

I up-shift my 1170 on the go on level road. I do not down-shift on the go. I stop and start over. It is like up-shifting a non-synchronized truck tranny except the right hand has to work both the throttle and the shift lever.

Here is my up-shift procedure.

1. Since you are new to this, practice working the throttle from about 900 to about 1800 and then back to about 1200 rpm and then back to high rpm. This allows you to hear and feel what the engine is doing and where the throttle position is.

2. At about 900 rpm, EASE OFF in 6th gear. With clutch fully engaged accelerate to about 1800 engine rpm.

3. Quickly push in the clutch and pull back the throttle AT THE SAME TIME --to about 1200 engine rpm.

4. Move your right hand quickly from throttle to the shift lever and move the shift lever to neutral and pause a split second.

(My 1170 H-pattern does not like to rush the shift out of a gear and then quickly around the corner of the H-pattern. The quick pause prevents the sliding 6th gear from blasting thru its detent and crashing into 5th gear.)

5. Cross the H pattern and without delay gently easy the shift lever forward into 7th gear. I usually experience a very slight gear grind at this point.

6. Note that the tractor is still rolling--this will allow a quick re-engagement of the clutch.

7. Accelerate to full speed in 7th. and repeat steps 3, 4, 5, and 6--- except no pause in neutral is needed because the shift movement is straight back.

Foot throttle is currently pretty gummed up... will stick at high rpm.
My 970 is smooth operating so I know how this could be used in the manner you are describing.
Pretty much truck driving and would use engine deceleration vice shifting to slow down (even empty) - not knowing if you'd ever get it into the one lower gear.
Thanks for all advice - will let you know as fuel tank is installed and some more systems are unstuck...
