It has been a few years since I had purchased a kit from CASE. This one is for a 1370. For some of the aftermarket kits I have been buying some CASE gaskets and orings to use anyway. If the parts are as good as the packaging everything should work great. You might not be able to read the date on the lower RH corner of the instruction sheet but it says 1981. And after all these years they are still not letting us know what they recommend for lube on the orings when installing the sleeves. Rod.

I used to use cheap dish soap on the o rings when installing the in the block. The soap out detirate the rubber like an oil base slip n slide will................Kenny

Rod: I can remember when CASE put together Engine Kits that were competitive w/ the aftermarket, and sometimes less. When did CASE stop recommending the use of Vaseline for the Sleeve O Rings? Vaseline is petroleum base, so a soap product would not be correct. Cummins specifically says to use a petroleum lube. OK guys, jump all over me, but what do you think the bottom O ring is exposed to?

Yes John and Tom CASE has never printed anything that I am aware not to use Vaseline or a petroleum product on their orings. That is what their service manuals say. The problem is a lot of aftermarket kits supply orings that are NOT compatible with petroleum products. Those orings will fail if it is used, don't ask me how I know. In fact I will know longer even take the chance of using a unknown oring in these 504 kits. I take and throw the supplied ones away and buy the CASE ones. Have not had a problem since. Rod.

I've used Vaseline and lately assembly lube. Knew a case mechanic that used go-joe (without grit). Of late a mechanic for cat had trouble with leaking O-rings said they were using plain old fashioned permatex. I have never had any problem but the bores must be clean.

Rod: Page M-24 of the CASE 730 830 Comfort King Service Manual, engine section covering the 251 267 284 & 301 engines, Step 5: "Lube the inside of the cyl. block & O rings w/ a very lite coating of Vaseline". I abbreviated the instructions some.

John Deere sleeve soap works best imo. Works good in bedroom also, but use sparingly as it can create suds! Lol

The "30" series repair manuals is where I learned it from,, I thought it is in the "70" series as well,, the orings have to be petroleum tolerant as they have engine oil on one side and antifreeze on the other, by the way I always use OEM orings also
cnt

Mrs dwag lets you rebuild engines in the house? I caught heck for even asking mine if I could put my ringear in her oven......

Yes John that is what I did a poor job of saying, CASE recommends only vaseline or petroleum jelly on their sleeve orings. Its the other guys we have to worry about, Rod.

Tom CASE has never recommended using anything other than vaseline in there service manuals. That is what I did a poor job of saying. Rod.

I have heard the theory the use of a petroleum base lube causes the O-rings to swell with time and helps them seal. Not sure I can buy that though I cant say it won't help.

To be safe always use the lube suggested by the kit provider, doing anything different will cancel warranty also, Rod.

Rod, I understand what you are saying about aftermarket O-rings and petroleum. Evidently the others aren't comprehending what you are getting at.
