This is post is for my a 1961 Case W3(530). Transmission casting number 1096
My old races and bearings are pitted for the differential carrier bearing housing. Wondering what tricks people use to remove or install race?
My other carrier housing was broken into 3 pieces. I noticed on the broken one the housing had heat marks on it in one spot from what I expect was a torch someone had used to heat housing to eject or accept race. Maybe that weakened housing to crack in 3 places? I'm thinking cut race with grinder in a couple places and attempt to break it out with a chisel? And to put it together put new race in freezer and carrier housing in oven for ?? minutes at ??? fahrenheit? I've done re&re flywheel ring gears yet don't want to damage my good and new carrier housings. Any advice appreciated.
Here is the differential side gear mated to pinions in the center wheel of crown gear with thrust washer installed. My manual says how to check for backlash yet does not show exactly where to measure it. From pics on internet I expect to slide feeler gauge in gap between the high point of rounded sides of the two gear teeth? Spec is 0.004-0.008"
