Mechanic finished - headed home

Well, got tractor back. Drove the 3.5 miles home; took about 40 minutes. New temp gauge peaked at 160 degrees near the end of the run. Have no idea how accurate these new gauges are or if this is normal operating temperatures. Purred like a kitten.

Now lots of clean up and more maintenance. First photo is leaving neighbor's; second photo is when our place came into view, (behind our windbreak). Realized my cast front wheels also carry fluid filled front tires. Not sure I need that fluid, but doubt any future leakage will damage the cast wheels much. One rear rim looks dicey by the valve stem though. Rust/scaling. We tried to replace the water-core unit, and while it did come out OK, did not have the right insert. Off to town tomorrow to try to find an old unit.

Harvest beginning here this week. Things will get busy.

I'm surprised you don't have a lot of wheat field fires having the wheat planted up next to the road.

Three weeks a go it was 104 degrees here. The fire department went out six times in one day for road side grass fires. One fire burned up a shed.

We do have our share of fires. On the other hand, for traffic, I often drive to town, (13 miles to one town; 16 to the other), and never see another vehicle. (Except during harvest.) Dry lightening is our big threat. As far as planting close to the road, the farmers want all the bushels they can get and the County cuts down on weed spray letting the farmers plant close. Evidently the custom here.

In Idaho I harvested wheat that was planted to the edge of the road like that. I worried about the end of the head getting hit by a car. There was marks in the blacktop where the drill crowded the paving a little too far. It's sure different from what I'm used to here in Iowa.

Here in Mo. the hwy. dept will mow anything that is planted on their right of way, even if it just one row of corn or beans. Seems like a waste of good land.
