930/1030 case turbo

Looking at a temp/cheap replacement until I can rebuild my 5020 which I use to bale and some light tillage. My plan was to find a 930 or 1030 not completely used up and add a turbo, additional oil cooling, less restrictive exhaust/intake and propane injection. The propane would be used instead of messing with the injection pump or anything like that. I've heard on a few of the forums that the 930/1030 head had a bad design for turbo. My question is why is this head design "not good"? I've also heard they can run hot after turbocharging but I think that could be fixed by intercooling the charged air and cooling the oil to help remove heat. Please reply with any comments or suggestions.

I think pushing an older engine like those beyond its design limits is asking for trouble....but then again, those were a tough old bird. Ben

Instead of wasting time and money on doing all that just go buy a decent 12 or 1370. You won't have any more in it than doing what you stated and will have something way nicer to operate compared to a 5020.

Read these, this is from a case book, about the 1200, basically same engine as 1030 but with head changes.

I agree with Doug (Dugger) put your money into your 5020 and get it done, buying a 930-1030 that is in good shape will run you 4-7 thousand dollars, and not enough HP. And turboing them is just a bunch more labor ($)

The 30 series is a fun tractor to own, as all my Case tractors are.

Check if the 930/1030 has the same PTO speed and diameter PTO shaft as your 5020, if not those will be more parts to hunt for and change-over. When propane injection kits were popular in the late 1960's, most did not add a turbo charger. You may have a tough time finding an intercooler to fit a 1960's Case 401/451 engine, you may have to build your own air to air intercooler as I think an air to water intercooler would be too much extra heat for a 930/1030 cooling system. Most dealers remove aftermarket turbochargers to get a better price for a tractor. When/if you resell the 930/1030 you may need to remove your modifications and sell them separately to get your money back out of the tractor.

How much horse power do you need? As others suggested, Case 1370, IH 1466, Deere 4620 and Deere 4630 are all inexpensive for there size. Those would all be less expensive than modifying a smaller tractor. The downside is you might like running one of those better than your 5020.

I'm still planning on rebuilding the 5020. Just need something cheap to fill in while it's rebuilt. Around here in Central nd those case tractors are less than 1500, where as a ol 4630 or care 70 series will cost 7500 to 10 grand. Also this would be propane/ diesel fumigation not straight propane. Thanks for all the info and comments. Has been very helpful.

You won't gain much hp with a turbo on a 9/1030 anyway. Be hard to get more than 120 hp. Be way better off with a 1070 and a turbo or an 1175 or 20/2290 if you need 540 pto. A 12/1370 if 1000 rpm pto is ok.

There is no way I would buy a hard starting, fuel drinking. over heating, no engine torque 4630. years ago the neighbor thought his 4620 would run with my 1370. I dispelled that myth in short order! A friend bought a pretty fair 1175 in western Mn for $4600. I have driven it and seems to be a pretty good tractor.

Hey Farmer Steve

I have a round fender 930 with a turbo I would consider selling if you are interested. Shoot me an email. Thanks
