885 Keeps stopping.

My DB 885 has a very aggravating problem. I'll be moving along bushogging a pasture when suddenly the motor speeds up like it's leaning out. It runs
that way for a minute or less, then slows back down to the normal speed where it was set at. It might do this twice, but then it slows down completely
and stops. I get off the tractor, work the lift pump lever for a few minutes, hit the key, get the motor turning over real good, spray just a little
starting fluid into the air cleaner, the motor cranks right up and runs fine for 5-20 minutes and then does the same thing. I just replaced the fuel
filters again and checked all the fittings for a possible air leak somewhere but can't find any. This tractor will not do this until it warms up to
normal operating temperature. I've never rebuilt the injector pump but I don't understand how that could be the problem inasmuch as the tractor runs
excellent until it warms up and all this constant stopping starts happening. Anybody got any ideas?

I assume you have bleed the filters and gotten all air out when you changed the filters? if so you have a lift pump issue or it is sucking air some where or you have something blocking the outlet flow, would be my first guesses

cnt

Might be the lift pump but sure can't be trapped air because the tractor will run perfect for about 20 minutes before all the trouble starts. I have sprayed starting fluid all over the lift pump while the tractor is running to see if the rpm's increase, indicating an air leak there, but nothing happens.

Did you use NAPA/WIX fuel filters? Any chance you may have installed an extra O ring in the top filter outer groove? That's the filter inlet passage, and a common problem when using those filters. I've lost count how many service calls to correct that mistake. The filter is sealed by the base groove O ring, but fellows think that filter groove needs one too when it doesn't..

Does it do it with the fuel tank completely full? I'm not sure about the 885 but 990 and 1210 draw fuel from the top of the tank through a pipe inside the tank, sometimes this pipe will crack inside the tank and suck air,try another remote tank to see if it gets better

Have you looked around inside the fuel tank in a dark garage with a strong flashlight for any kind of debris that might be intermittently clogging the intake? Anything from lint to a dead bug? Sure sounds like a fuel supply problem which is what you also think based on what you're checking.

Fuel swirling or pulsing in the bowl means the lift pump is healthy. It will be more noticeable at idle.

If not clearly visible, I'd look at the lift pump or its push rod as culprits.

Other thing to try, take off the tank cap and use high pressure air to blow back into the tank from the fitting that goes to the lift pump.
