Starter keeps running

I started my 1370 and heard a noise so I shut it off and realized the starter was running even after I shut the tractor off.
The key switch was turned to the off position and the starter drive was not engaged but the starter motor was still running.

I was able to disconnect a battery cable but the starter will start running again by reconnecting the battery cable. This si
with the switch in the off position. I pulled the starter to check the drive and i can not find anything wrong. I checked the
solenoid with an ohm meter and I can not find anything wrong. i checked the wire coming from the start switch and I can not
find a problem.

Some how the starter wants to keep running but not engage the starters drive. I've tried to check everything I can think of
with no luck.

Any suggestions?

The starter is an MT35 Delco Starter
 
Rust or corrosion in the solenoid. The magnet still works giving you a good ohm reading but the contacts for starter are corroded enough or have rust flakes touching them so they are making constant contact
 
I agree the solenoid is stuck on, I have gotten them loose by tapping on it with the handle of a hammer ect,, this is only a temp fix you will need to replace it soon even if it comes loose by tapping,, some lasted many years though

Bad solenoid simple as that. One of 2 thing most likely happened.
#1 battery is a bit low so the contacts have welded up inside the solenoid.
#2 the plunger in the solenoid has stuck due to age and or rust/dirt/grime
 
Delco starters, whattaya know. On Chevys it's usually the other problem, won't even click, but the cure is the same: break out the hammer, get it home and replace the starter/solenoid assembly. With the Chevys it's usually because they run the exhaust right beside the starter, on your tractor it's probably just old age.
