Case Model C questions

I have acquired a 1935 model C and I need some information from you Case guys, ( first Case for me).

1- I need the diameter and height of the intake tube that comes through the hood.

2- Where can I find the part of the air intake that bolts to the exhaust manifold? Or can some one give the dimensions of it and I'll make one.

3- Is there an oil filter? If so, where is it located? ( I have a operators manual and a parts manual, but its very vague on this. or I am just over looking.)

4- When I picked the tractor up the radiator was full of antifreeze. While diagnosing why I lost spark and cranking the engine over the water pump started leaking. Is there a seal kit I can purchase? Or just replace the water pump? If the later, Where can I find one?

I have been searching the web for info on this tractor. Should have just come here first cause I know I will get the correct information.

Thank you in advance for the help, I'm sure there will be more to come.

Thank you,

John @ J&R Farms

John Saeli dba external_link sells the intake tube; he has a website.

Manifolds are available from Rosewood Machine (another website).

There is no oil filter on a C.

If I remember correctly, the C waterpump is different from that of a D series which John Saeli sells. Case no longer supplies parts for waterpumps of that vintage.

intake tube is rolled steel with a crimped seam, original ones can be found or repro's are available, ask Don Livingston, water pump has two hardened steel washers for a seal, clean them up and apply water proof grease or marine grease, check bushings for wear, those who offer you a high dollar re-built unit are giving you the pickle, no oil filter unless they had an add on unit

No oil filter. Supposed to drain oil to bottom plug, then add oil until it came out of top plug when using kerosine as fuel.

Be careful removing water pump. They are easy to break, and now a very hard to find spare part.

My dad's C Case was in our family for over 70 years. I fixed the water pump about 10 years ago. To put it mildly, getting the pump off was a real challenge. One thing in your favor is your tractor had antifreeze in it to retard rusting. Not so with dad's C. The pump pilot rusted to the block pilot. I would get it running and see if the pump might stop leaking. The C water pump give meaning to the saying "let sleeping dogs lie". LOL

As indicated by others, you have to NOT break the casting because a good one is very rare.

One thing in my favor was the gasket was thick like a sixteenth inch. Another thing favorable is the areas between the casting ears are accessible to using thin wedges.

I used about nine small cheap screwdrivers as wedges and drove them uniformly into the gasket AWAY FROM THE FRAGILE EARS. Any scarring of the mating surfaces is fixable with hard Permatex and a file.

The metal to metal seal surface is back at the impeller. The coil spring to keep the seal gap closed is up front pushing on the outer race of the ball bearing. The outer race of the ball bearing must not be froze/rusted to the pump casting. The spring must be in good condition. My coil spring was totally rusted away and not available thru parts. I ended up finding Belleville springs and used my judgment as to how much preload to apply.

If the seal surfaces are damaged, take it to a good machinist.

Most D series water pumps can be repaired at very little cost. I'm not buying any of those foreign made pumps especially from NY.

Hay john, I also just inherited an old
c and im in process of getting running
again. So far I've made progress but
have a long way to go. This forum I've
learned can answer any question you
throw at it

Thanks for the good info about the oil situation, i will drain and replace.

Thanks for all the good answers for the water pump, it looks like it could be a pain. I might just wait and see what it does after I get it running. I sent the magneto out for rebuild as I am short on spare time around here this time of year.

The part for the air intake is the "Flange for air intake" Part #4581A anyone know where I might find a replacement? I am going to contact Don Livingston about the tube, and will ask about this also.

Thanks again for all the replies!!

John, I have a 37 CC. I've sent my water pump out for repair and it came back leaking worse than before. find a can of water pump grease and every other time you run it, give that grease knob an extra turn or two.

Thanks for the info Eagle Beagle! That is a real nice looking tractor, maybe mine will look like that one day!!

I got in contact with Don L. and he has the air intake flange I need and he is looking for an intake pipe.

Thanks again for all the help. I am sure there will be more questions along the way of this restoration.

Eagle Beagle mentioned sending his pump out and it came back leaking worse. That was the situation I experienced with my pump repair that I mentioned in my previous post.

I took it apart before I ever sent it out and noticed the spring had corroded into several pieces. I sent the pump out partly disassembled with the corroded spring chunks separate in the shipping box.

Because it still leaked after returning, I took the rebuilt pump apart again myself and found out the rebuilder had not replaced the spring that keeps the sealing surfaces together. I suspect he did not notice the bad spring and may not have known a spring was needed. Anyway as I mentioned, I installed my own spring made of Belleville washers. I could have used wave springs.
