Case 730 Ignition

I have been having trouble keeping the 730 running. What it does is …. when you turn the key and start it up it cuts off when you let go of the key. If you keep the starter engaged it keeps running but let off and goes dead. Took a test light and the wire that goes to the distributor gives me a bright light till I let off the key and then it goes very dim. Does anybody know what causes this? if I keep the starter engaged it eventually keeps running.

Check the resistor on the back side of the front tank support behind the engine, it should have voltage on both sides when the switch is on, if not the resistor has failed or that circuit has opened up for some reason.

I have had several do that and like mEl said I always track the path first and see where it is losing it, I have had them bee a bad ign switch many times and resistor as well

My DC chore tractor was doing that a few weeks ago. In my case it turned out to be the coil. It would run good with a jumper wire to the resistor from the battery, but changing the switch did no good.

If this has a bypass circuit, you will have 2 small studs on the starter solenoid. One coming from the
ignition switch to energize the solenoid and the other, which is hot only when the solenoid is working
goes to the hot side of the coil. There usually would be 2 wires on this stud, one from the resistor and
one from the starter solenoid. If you do not have a bypass circuit, the voltage available to the coil,
while the engine is cranking, will be less then desired for starting ease because it's passing thru the
resistor too
