730 steering

The front wheels on my 730 Case wobble/flutter once in a while. The tie rods are tight and the drag length is tight. The steering wheel has about 6-7 inch play... is that too much play? Any ideas? Thanks

Standard front axle or adjustable wide front. Adj. wide front has a steering knuckle under the lower radiator hose that sometimes goes to heck and causes a lot of play in the steer wheel.

My 730 will go into a speed wobble from time to time too. Have gone over the darn thing front to back and can't get completely rid of it . I can make it worse by carrying some thing on the 3ph going down the road. Only happens to my tractor while going down the road at high speed.

Probably got water in the gearbox thru the seal and rusted the bearings. Need to take it apart and replace the bearings. Think they are 11CB and 12 BC timken bearings. The races cost about $65 apiece but the taper roller part is only about $10. If not rotted too bad can replace only the seal and taper bearing. Same bearings in a 64 western special 930 which I am replacing now. Did the box on a 800 recently that is the same as yours. phone 606.881.3042 and I can give advice if you can't find parts.

if it is power steering/row crop the end play on the worm may be off which actuates the steering assist, too loose and they will go into a wobble, as the worm goes fore and aft actuating the steering valves, I set the one on my 400 by trial and error.

Brutus has it correct, power steering spool has to much play, the front cap needs removed and the nut tightened just enough to stop the wobble, to tight and you lose the power assist so trial and error is best, the service manual gives a torque spec but I have never set one successfully using it and I worked at a professional service shop on them all my life so have seen a few.

This advice only applies to a powersteering tractor

I didn't think the spool adjustment would allow 6-7" of play in the wheel. Like I stated the gearboxes on he standard 800 and 930 western special got rain water thru the seal ruining the bearings. This is the 3rd 930 I have done to repair and replace bearings.

(quoted from post at 22:24:43 06/11/17) Plus the fact that he said the play is in the gearbox by the clutch pedal. It is a standard tractor not row crop.

After reading all the posts I see that, they were never sold in our territory as we sold row crops, your advice would fill the bill in that circumstance.
