CASE VAC: Shifting Issue

Hi guys,

I have a CASE VAC-14, also I have a service manual from yesterday's tractors. I've been having problems with it getting stuck shifting gears and having a hard time getting it back to neutral. Its not "in gear" but its not out of gear.

First question, is that what it means when the manual talks about getting stuck in two gears at once?

Next question, I've pulled the shifter cover off and out and inspected the shifters. Problem is that even with the service manual I don't know what I'm looking for to be wrong. What should I be looking for? How would I know if a shifter was bent? I'm hesitant to start fully disassembling the whole apparatus until I have eliminated any easier to fix possibilities.

A couple things, one gear has a broken tooth and there is a broken half of a metal ring. For all I know that could be a washer or part of the shifter spring but there was a post about checking the reverse gears ring or bushing or something in another post, any thoughts on that? I will try to attach some images.

Other things, how does this oil look? All things considered this gearing and whatnot looks pretty good to me considering the outside of the case and other things I've disassembled but then again everything in the service manual is a black and white photo copy.

Thanks for your time,

- Ian

Sorry there are a couple duplicates in there. I mess up the photo upload ...every time... but when it works it sure is helpful!

1. Stuck in 2 gears means exactly that, review the pics, worn interlock plugs are often the problem.

2. I've seen a couple bent forks and it was obvious because apparently they were horsed around when they got stuck (like in 2 gears) and badly bent. Look at it closely, does it seem deformed? It seems to me that a fork bent to the point of malfunction would be obvious but you deserve a better answer than I can give you.

3. The gear teeth ends are worn from shifting while traveling and/or clutch not completely disengaged. Pretty common. I don't know about the chipped tooth, I don't think it is a problem unless it is chewing on the mating gear teeth. Don't know about the adrift ring piece.

On the oil, after the tractor has sat over night crack the drain plug check for water. I would change all oil on a recently acquired tractor unless you know when the last oil change occurred and type of oil filled. It is good insurance and relatively cheap. The mark on the dipstick is the full mark, oil level is checked with plug screwed in. Factory fill SAE 90 gear oil.

Thanks for the direction Joe. I looked at the interlock plugs and I do think they are a bit too short but not as malformed as the one in the image you provided. If I wanted to get replacements do you think that is something I'd have to get from a machine shop or is there somewhere online? I couldn't seem to find them through my regular sources: yesterday's tractor or steiner.

There is a little bit of play in the counter shaft gears, maybe up to an inch. I was thinking that maybe that broken metal ring is from the "spring washer"and that was letting there be more play then there should be and that was causing problems... ? Should there be that much movement along that shaft, the one below the main shaft that the shifters are sitting on. (Both spacers are in tact and look fine)

Thanks,

- Ian

Do you have this page (pic 1) in your manual? Qualify the plugs , springs, and balls. Check the rails in way of the detents for wear that would allow the interlocks or balls to slip when shifting.

Think about what gear you were in, or shifting to, when the shifter became stuck. I would think it would likely be reverse/1st gear or vice-versa. You could try swapping the interlock plugs if one is better than the other.

You could check for new plugs with a Case dealer, original p/n VT2000 changed to A29060. If you have them fabricated they will probably have to be hardened also.

I no longer have a VAC or a service manual so I am not going to go any further than I can be positive and still have relative pics.

There are several people here that have a great deal more knowledge of this transmission than I ever had,
